One of the problems in modern mainstream indological historical inference is the ignoring of the principles of evolutionary inference that are applied in biology: the first attestation of a fossil is not the first time or place the lineage under consideration appears. For example, the first dinosaur body fossils, i.e., bones known to date, are from around 231-233 Mya. However, fossil footprints provide evidence for an early member of the dinosaur line proper from around 246 Mya – a full 13-15 million years before the first fossil. Similarly, if you find a manuscript of rare text from a certain date, there is an indological tendency to infer that its production might not have been too far from its copying. Of course, to be fair, they would also look for citations of the text and infer that if a text is not cited before a certain date, it might not have existed. Lack of citation might simply mean local absence of its knowledge rather than its nonexistence. Similarly, "advanced" or "derived" features imply a relatively late date, but do not automatically mean that it can be translated linearly into an absolute date. As an example, imagine if the Gilgit manuscript had not been found, automatically a late date might have been accepted for the vAma-srotas tantra-s.
