[Special Feature] Venturing into the Uncharted Territory Called “Genre” — A Roundtable on Women and Genre Films with Directors Lee Kyoungmi and Jang Yoojung, and Showbox Executive Vice President (Head of Film Business) Lee Hyunjung

— When talking about memorable female characters in genre films, it's impossible to leave out Hwarim (Kim Goeun) from Exhuma, or Suin (Kim Hyeyoon) and Sejeong (Jang Daa) from Salmokji. Showbox's recent genre films have also been receiving strong responses. What do you look for most when deciding to invest in genre films these days?

Lee Hyunjung: From the perspective of an investor and distributor, the genre itself doesn't matter as long as the screenplay is compelling. However, one thing we've learned over the past two years, after working across melodrama, historical films, horror, and zombie films, is that simply making a good movie isn't enough. A film needs to offer something that makes it especially enjoyable to watch together in a theater, or something people will continue talking about long after they've seen it.

In the past, thrillers and crime films were genres people frequently watched in theaters. Nowadays, audiences tend to favor horror and comedy instead. Experiencing fear and laughter together amplifies both the excitement and the tension, making these shared-experience films particularly appealing.
Even a drama can resonate widely if it's emotional enough to make an entire audience cry together.
In the past, films were heavily criticized if their internal logic wasn't airtight. Today, even if a film leaves certain gaps, many viewers actively enjoy speculating about them and offering their own interpretations.

Take Salmokji, for example. Audiences imagine the backstory between Kitae (Lee Jongwon) and Suin, who were once lovers. With Colony, people even turned the evolving zombies into internet memes. Viewers create YouTube videos or social media content sharing their interpretations, or discuss them during GV (Guest Visit) events, and we on the marketing side pay close attention to that feedback. That's why, these days, even genre films are intentionally leaving room for audiences to step in and participate through their own interpretations.

[First Half-Year Review] Salmokji, like The Man Who Lives with the King, is a film that sparked a passionate response from audiences, with repeat viewings driven by deep immersion in the story. Based on the motif of a water ghost, the film emphasized the relationships between its characters, evolving into an “experiential” film in which viewers, after watching, imagined and expanded upon the untold parts of the story themselves. Among these, the "ill-fated romance" created by Kim Hyeyoon and Lee Jongwon provided a unique source of enjoyment, as such a dynamic is rarely seen as a reason for success in horror films.
