STRIKE GERMANY is a call for international cultural workers to strike from German cultural institutions. It is a call to refuse German cultural institutions' use of McCarthyist policies that suppress freedom of expression, specifically expressions of solidarity with Palestine 1/x
As this document is not being sold and has been assembled through the labour of volunteers, we thank the authors whose work has been reproduced here, and hope the turther dissemination of their work Is taken in the spirit in which we gathered their texts.
This is the very first edition of the Die Schande: a collection of texts which reflect on the current repressive political climate in Germany.
Available in Berlin now.
Fuck Germany, Strike Germany
Die Schande seeks only to make an intervention into the popular discourse in Germany, not to profit from these texts. The selection of these texts was made anonymously and without the permission of the authors.
Hundreds of posters have appeared around galleries in Berlin on the occasion of Gallery Weekend 2024.
In the face of cultural silence around Palestine and German complicity in the genocide in Gaza we say:
NO BUSINESS AS USUAL
🇵🇸SOLIDARITY!✊
The @DAAD_Germany @DAAD_Artists and its president’s Joybrato Mukherjee’s near fanatic support of genocidal Israel can only be met with a complete refusal of collaboration, just as artist Jonas Staal and author China Miéville show.
Author China Miéville rescinds his fellowship at the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) over its President's complicity in anti-Palestinian racism and censorship. This follows Dutch artist Jonas Staal's refusal of a nomination… https://t.co/YN1lwHd7HD
Mother of Whores was originally commissioned for With Legs Wide Open – A Whore’s Ride Through History, an exhibition opening today at @GayMuseum in Berlin. Juliana Fadil-Luchkiw and I have pulled it from the show in support of @strikegermany. Here’s our full statement:
For @FilmComment, I wrote about the protests at Berlinale 2024, Strike Germany, NO OTHER LAND, the crisis of agency for film workers, and the limits of “political art” https://t.co/RvzZr6PCZi
Next up in our #strikegermany solidarity, #Berlinale2024 counter-programming — wherein we're covering select titles from the Palestinian Film Archive — is Dhruv Goyal on Maryse Gargour's The Land Speaks Arabic.

The posters that are being branded as ‘antisemitic’ in German media contain messages like “Gaza is being starved” , “Ceasefire now!” or “All Gazan hospitals were bombed by Israel”
The German cultural sphere is complicit in genocide. STRIKE GERMANY!

All over Berlin, posters with messages opposing the genocide against the Palestinian people appeared under the name of the theatres @HebbelAmUfer and @Volksbuehne. Together with Berlin’s culture senator, these institutions distanced themselves from the poster’s contents. Shameful
In Berlin-Mitte und Kreuzberg werden derzeit Plakate im Namen von Berliner Bühnen mit Aussagen zum Nah-Ost-Konflikt aufgehängt, die nicht von den Einrichtungen verantwortet sind. Senator @ChialoJoe dazu:
Unfortunately, reasons to join the call keep increasing with every day. Shameful and downright embarrassing position of @maxplanckpress in line with Germany’s intellectual provicialism. Full solidarity with @anthroprofhage.

Während sich immer mehr Künstler:innen und Intellektuelle @strikegermany anschließen, sorgen deutsche Institutionen weiterhin fleißig selbst dafür, dass es um Deutschland langsam einsam wird.
