I have often thought, as I imagine many have, to want nothing more than to go back. To be returned in time five years, a decade, maybe two to avoid the mistakes I have made. I have often thought how wonderful my life would be if I could return and forgo wasting time on a pointless degree, relationships, wastes of money and the like. I have even bargained with God that I would not indulge in the cheap use of such a gift by investing, manipulating people, nor any other hedonic excess; I would simply like to correct my own errors and with such little cost too!

I would still have my family, I could not be such an ungrateful tool to my parents, cherish time with my grandfather, be more kind to my aunt, be a better brother.

I could find and keep the same friends, maybe even make more. After all, I know where they are and will be and what they like and don’t like. I could simply make them again.

It’s was a fun fantasy; but there would be a cost. One that I simply could not mitigate, no matter how much I planned or schemed. A cost I couldn’t bear to pay. For such a journey through time would undoubtedly cost me my children.

Every other relationship I could plan for and even expedite, but I couldn’t hope to recreate my daughter and son. For they were conceived specific components, at a specific time, and specific circumstances. How could I possibly recreate them exactly as they are? It would be impossible.

Perhaps I could have other children in this fantasy, “better” children even; whatever that would even mean. But I couldn’t bear to not have these ones.

If given such an offer how could I even think of taking it? I might look out at the bitter cold and biting wind of life howling around me (much of it my own making) and wonder at the thought of changing its direction but then I turn to these two beautiful embers, small but burning brightly, with my wife and I huddled around them. How could I risk them? Many permutations or life existed within my wife and I but it was these two which ignited, which I dare not disturb for fear of never feeling their unique warmth again. I couldn’t bear the thought.

No.

I must stoke these embers. Stoke them into flames burning from as from coals, long lasting and hot. They must be ready. I will carry them into danger and hardship, like a lantern in the wilderness; they must be fueled enough to withstand the journey. Eventually, they will be self sustaining, no longer requiring my direct care.

What will they be then I wonder? Perhaps I can carry them to the tops of mountains where they will be beacons in dark winters. Perhaps they will have set themselves aglow in a lighthouse on storm torn shores, or maybe they will be a humble campfire in a dark wood - a refuge for weary travelers?

How could I wish away such possibilities just to alter the past? I cannot dwell on the fantasy of changing what was. My children represent the hope of what will be, and the beauty of it is: I have far more control over what will be than I do over what was.

I must show them the way, it is my purpose. If our fate is to be a grim one, let them stand upon my bones to reach just a little higher. I pray that I can boost them over the next obstacle until I can go no further, then they must continue on their own; until they stoke their own embers and the cycle begins anew.

Lord, blessed is your name. Thank you for entrusting me with these tiny flames. Forgive me my weakness and give me strength to forgive the weakness in others. Lead me, Father, as I lead my children; grant me wisdom and presence to not dwell in the void of bygone years; instead, help me look forward. Keep me, o Lord, burning with the fragrance of your holy oil that I might pass flames of truth, righteousness, love and honor to my children. Amen.
