A cybersecurity analyst sat down at a family dinner. His mom, his sister, his brother, and his wife were all on their phones all on WhatsApp.

He asked one question: "Can I see your WhatsApp privacy settings?"

His mom: last seen visible to everyone. Profile photo visible to everyone. Read receipts on. No app lock. No two-step verification. Cloud backup unencrypted. She said: "I didn't know there were privacy settings."

His sister: same defaults. Plus she'd been sending sensitive photos IDs, medical documents, credit cards as normal attachments. Permanently saved in the recipient's camera roll. She didn't know "View Once" existed.

His brother: same defaults. Plus he was receiving 4-5 spam calls per week from unknown numbers through WhatsApp. He didn't know the app has a "Silence Unknown Callers" toggle that blocks every one of them.

His wife: the only one with two-step verification enabled. Everything else: factory default. Conversations unlocked. Backups unencrypted. Last seen broadcasting to every contact.

"Four people at this table. Combined WhatsApp usage: 17 years. Combined settings changed: 1. Out of 9 that matter."

He looked at all four phones and said:

"Every message you've ever sent is end-to-end encrypted in transit meaning nobody can intercept it between phones. But your backup is unencrypted meaning every message is readable in your iCloud or Google Drive. Your conversations are visible to anyone who picks up your phone because you never turned on Chat Lock. Your photos live permanently in other people's camera rolls because you never used View Once. Your last seen tells every contact when you were last awake. Your read receipts confirm every message you've opened. And your WhatsApp account has no second password meaning one SIM swap and someone else owns your identity."

He walked each of them through all 9 settings before the meal arrived. Total time: 12 minutes. By the time the food came, every phone at the table was more secure than it had been for the past 5 years.

"WhatsApp is the most used app on Earth with the most unconfigured settings on Earth. Every privacy feature exists. Every security layer is available. Every one is turned off by default."

Here are the 9 things he changed 🧵

A guy had slow Wi-Fi in his bedroom. 18 Mbps. Netflix buffered. Zoom froze. His phone dropped to cellular mid-call.

He bought a Wi-Fi extender. $40. It helped for a week. Then the same problems came back with full signal bars, which made it more confusing.

He bought a mesh system. $200. Better coverage. But the far bedroom still stuttered during video calls.

He called his ISP. They upsold him from 200 Mbps to 500 Mbps. $30/month more. The bedroom got slightly faster. Not $30/month faster.

Total spent trying to fix the Wi-Fi: $240 upfront + $360/year in plan upgrades.

His neighbor, a network engineer who's spent 14 years designing wireless systems for hospitals and office buildings where a dropped connection can mean a dropped patient, came over one evening.

He looked at the router. He looked at the house layout. He opened one app on his phone. He ran one test.

"Your router is inside a TV cabinet in the corner of your living room. It's broadcasting through a wooden cabinet, through a wall, through a hallway, and through another wall to reach the bedroom. Every obstacle cuts the signal in half. By the time it reaches the bedroom, you're getting 15% of the power this router is capable of. You didn't need an extender. You didn't need a mesh system. You didn't need a faster plan. You needed to move the router 8 feet to the left and change 3 settings."

He moved the router. He changed 8 settings. Total time: 15 minutes. Total cost: $0.

The bedroom went from 18 Mbps to 190 Mbps. Without the extender. Without the mesh. Without the plan upgrade.

The mesh system went back to the store. The ISP plan went back to 200 Mbps. Total annual savings: $600.

"Most people solve Wi-Fi problems with money. Faster plans. More hardware. Bigger routers. The problem is almost never the equipment. It's the location, the settings, and 9 things most homeowners have never checked."

Here are the 9 things he fixed 🧵

Ring has sold over 25 million doorbells and roughly 22 million of them are running on factory settings nobody has touched since installation day.

A guy installed his Ring doorbell 2 years ago.

He mounted it.
Connected the Wi-Fi.
Downloaded the app.
Since then, one function.
Someone rings.
He checks his phone.
They're already gone.

He also gets 43 motion alerts a day.
Cars driving past.
Neighbors walking dogs.
A tree branch swaying.

Shadows sliding across the porch at sunset.

His neighbor's cat.
His neighbor's cat again.
His neighbor's cat for the 14,000th time.

His phone buzzes so often he turned off notifications 8 months ago.

His Ring doorbell now records everything and alerts him about nothing.

The worst of both worlds.

His neighbor, a retired home security installer who spent 22 years designing commercial and residential surveillance systems across 3,000+ properties, watched him silence another notification during a barbecue and finally said something.
"You don't own a doorbell.

You own a person detection AI, a package theft alert system, a two-way intercom, a motion intelligence engine, a video answering machine for your front door, a porch surveillance timeline, a privacy masking tool, and a whole-home notification network connected to the Echo sitting in your kitchen.

You're using it to check who rang the bell after they already left.

That's 10% of what's mounted on your door.
The other 90% has been recording your neighbor's cat 40 times a day because nobody configured the one setting that separates people from everything else."

Here are the 9 Ring features most owners have never turned on 🧵

A guy called his ISP 4 times in one year complaining about slow Wi-Fi.

Each time, they ran a remote diagnostic, told him everything looked fine on their end, and suggested he upgrade to a faster plan. He upgraded twice. From 200 Mbps to 500 Mbps. His monthly bill went from $60 to $90.

His Wi-Fi didn't get faster. He was still buffering Netflix. Still dropping Zoom calls. Still watching the loading spinner on web pages in his own living room.

His neighbor, a network engineer who's spent 14 years designing and securing corporate networks for hospitals and financial firms, heard him complaining one evening and said: "Can I look at your router for 2 minutes?"

He looked at the settings. He looked at the placement. He ran one speed test.

"Your ISP is delivering 490 Mbps to your modem. Your Wi-Fi is delivering 74 Mbps to your laptop. The problem isn't your internet. It's the 6 feet between your router and your device. The router is inside a cabinet. The channel is congested. The firmware hasn't been updated in 3 years. The DNS is the slowest option available. The bandwidth is halved by a factory setting. And you're renting this equipment for $14/month a device worth $60 that Comcast has charged you $672 for over 4 years."

He changed 9 settings in 15 minutes. The speed test went from 74 Mbps to 440 Mbps.

The next morning, his friend called Comcast and downgraded back to the 200 Mbps plan. His Wi-Fi was still faster than it was on 500 Mbps with factory defaults.

Monthly savings from the downgrade: $30. Monthly savings from returning the rental router: $14. Annual savings: $528 with faster, more stable, more secure internet than he'd ever had.

"Your ISP would rather sell you a faster plan than fix your settings. One makes them $30/month. The other costs them a 5-minute phone call they're not incentivized to make."

Here are the 9 things he changed 🧵
