Enzo Fernandez could well have put himself in a worse position. Poor results and Daddy Maresca could be gone, he’s no Pep. The board don’t want to spend the money, Maresca insisted, he will always be an asset to sell on again if Maresca has gone. Or maybe Madrid comes in, we all know he would jump ship in the blink of an eye. But the booing won’t stop, except it will follow him and City now, and won’t be affecting the atmosphere around our club. I would have been ok whether he stayed or went, I trust the manager to use the money wisely to carry on building his special team. It’ll certainly be quieter supporting Chelsea

Here's my take on the non-technical issues surrounding Enzo Fernandez (a lot of people might unfollow me but that's alright, I am here to put my point not please you with opinions that are aligned with you):

Take your time to read it entirely.

Enzo Fernandez livestreamed teammates singing a chant that mocked the African heritage of French players ("they play for France but their parents are from Angola/Cameroon/Nigeria") and included a transphobic jab at Mbappe.

The French federation called it racist and discriminatory. Wesley Fofana, his own Chelsea teammate, labelled it as "uninhibited racism".

Several French players at Chelsea unfollowed him. Fernandez apologized, cancelled holiday plans to speak to the squad in person, donated to an anti-discrimination charity, and Chelsea closed their process without a ban. FIFA and CONMEBOL never delivered a meaningful sanction. Fofana later said he accepted the apology and that Fernandez "is not racist", framing it as a cultural education issue, something I wholeheartedly agree with.

That sequence is now two years old. It gets revived whenever it is useful, especially by the so-called "Saints" on this platform.

What's irritating as a City supporter is watching some of our own turn that resolved incident into the ultimate character veto the moment Maresca showed interest in the player. The same fans who had little to say when Julian Alvarez (who was also on that bus), who was associated with the club around the time, and as if Enzo alone carries the full moral weight of an entire national-team dressing room. The purity test appears exactly when it fits the narrative.

We have signed and celebrated plenty of players who arrived with baggage, attitude problems, or past controversies because they could help the team win. That's the reality of elite football. If the technical case is strong, a midfielder Maresca already knows and trusts, capable of controlling games and adding steel after the recent midfield changes, then inventing a higher moral standard only for this particular deal looks selective. "Person over football" sounds noble until you notice it is applied almost exclusively to the rumour you don’t like.

The funny thing: Most of the loudest moralisers will be singing his name the first time he puts in a dominant performance in sky blue. That’s how these things usually go.

Nobody is perfect. Every single one of us carries biases and prejudices shaped by the environment we grew up in, the culture around us, the media we consumed, and the circle we moved in. That doesn’t excuse the 2024 chant, it was ugly and deserved the backlash, but it does put it in human context. Fernandez grew up in Argentine football culture where certain songs after big rivalries are treated as banter, however wrong that is by wider standards. He got caught, he apologised, he faced his teammates, and the people most directly affected (including Fofana) moved on. Treating that moment as permanent proof of who he is forever is lazy.

And if you're coming from the school of thought that "people never change", then be prepared for the same standard to be turned straight back on you. How does it feel when someone labels you a permanent shitbag based on the worst thing you’ve ever said or done in a moment of stupidity or group euphoria? Because that's the exact logic some of our own fans are applying to Enzo right now. If growth and forgiveness are impossible, then none of us get to claim the moral high ground, including the ones currently acting like they’re above it all.

So, shut the fuck up and shove that wannabe morality up your arse. Also, if you have such a high moral ground, then don't support City in solidarity with the people of Sudan. We cool?

Does anybody think Enzo was told that a transfer would still not have happened at this stage? He is/has been used by City and Maresca to throw our plans in to chaos. Who knows what he’s been told by them, but it wouldn’t have been that he would still be left hanging out to dry the day before deadline day. This is a stitch up on Enzo to hurt Chelsea, he’s been used as collateral. Give me a better reason why City haven’t made a bid when they knew Chelsea needed time, and could well pull the plug and punish the player.
