I grew up in a house so violent in the 1960s that you didn’t call the police. You didn’t call CPS. You didn’t say a damn word outside those walls. You sure as hell didn’t tell your teacher.

I know what it feels like when a violent mother makes a child believe they’re about to die. I’m not talking about a spanking. I’m talking about terror so deep it rewires you for life. My mother should have gone to prison. I’ve never really fully explained everything that happened to my sister and I because some of you won’t even believe it, but it’s the fucking truth.

I can only imagine the fear Cora and Dawson felt in those last minutes. Callan was a baby, but those two older kids knew. They knew their mother was the one ending their lives.

I live with the lifelong effects of that kind of fear. Don’t ask me to feel sorry for this bitch. I won’t.
