@LeeGriff2255 @SkyNews It’s a very good question. I don’t watch sport but I guess whilst boxers can get hit in face they’re not constantly being hit in the head? Not like say header-ing a ball in football, which was being done not just in games but practice - so there’s the element of repetition…

@LeeGriff2255 @SkyNews … In the case of athletes, it’s probable that repeated head trauma increases ALS risk, as it does with dementia but as Prof Malaspina states, we have only correlation at the moment. The mechanism is not known.

@LeeGriff2255 @SkyNews Not sure if you mean in athletes only or generally what causes ALS. 90-95% of cases are sporadic, which means the patient has no family history of the disease. Many genetic mutations can make you more susceptible but environmental factors play a part….
