Couldn’t agree more. We need to move away from high-cost exquisite systems to high volume attritable assets that can scale to the size of the problem.

We need to take a Tesla-type approach to production. Software-defined capabilities and infrastructure that are modular and flexible to respond quickly to the demands of the warfighter.

8:46 AM, American 11, WTC North Tower is struck.
9:03 AM, United 175, WTC South Tower is struck.
9:37 AM, American 77, Pentagon is struck.
9:59 AM, WTC South Tower collapses.
10:03 AM, United 93, crashes in Shanksville, PA.
10:28 AM, WTC North Tower collapses.

343 NYC firefighters & 23 NY Police officers sacrificed their lives.
2,462 US troops were killed in Operation Enduring Freedom & Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

In 102 minutes, 19 hijackers took the lives of 2,977 people from 93 nations.

Over 15,000 US service members & contractors died in the post-9/11 war zones of Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and elsewhere. And over 30,000 U.S. service members & veterans of the post-9/11 wars have died by suicide.

Twenty-three years since that day, the deep sorrow of September 11, 2001, remains permanently etched in my mind.

I am honored to serve in the national security community that does everything in their power to never let another 9/11 happen. When I see the work that these professionals do in preventing such atrocities from ever happening again, I feel an immense amount of pride. Many will never know the details of the efforts that we undertake to identify and eliminate these threats across the globe, the dangerous locations or situations that many have to operate in to secure our way of life. But I can assure you that a few words describe the values they share on behalf of this nation: courage, commitment, service, team, honor, & outcomes.

For me, 9/11 gave me a singular focus—to protect and promote freedom around the world. I often reflect on how our communities came together, supported the families and first responders, and stood proud as one, strong nation. We collectively resolved to protect America and refused to allow terrorism to break it apart. Never again!

The stories of those who died, and the heroic actions of those who responded, both then and still today, remain part of our shared history.

As I do every year, I will stand in silence at 8:46 AM, put my hand on my heart, and say the Pledge of Allegiance. Too many in our nation have forgotten that simple declaration. Perhaps this year, you will all join me in honoring those who have given so much to our country.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America,
and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Until the day I die, I will honor the victims of that despicable act of terrorism. I will salute the firefighters and police officers who sacrificed their lives that day trying to save the thousands who worked in the twin towers, and the hundreds who have died since. And I will remember all the soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, civilians, and their families who gave their lives trying to bring safety to our world.

September 11th is forever engraved in my heart and our history. Our response to its impact continues, 23 years later. I will never forget.
