@KhetheloNkosie @Lesufi @UmalusiSA I also think in our comparisons, we ignore some crucial variables. For instance it's difficult to compare a sch that has 250 Matrics doing maths of which 200 pass it with one that has 30 & 20 pass it. Same as comparing an IEB sch in an affluent area to one in a rural setting.

@KhetheloNkosie @Lesufi @UmalusiSA Maybe to get better informed, we should undertake an assignment. When the results come out, we check 10 top IEB & top 10 public schools in different regions eg Jhb, Tshwane etc, do a compressive analysis of results, maybe for past 5 years too, come back & present our observations

@KhetheloNkosie @Lesufi @UmalusiSA I agree, they study the same thing and the only difference is that the exams are set by different bodies. Correct, Independent Examination Board is just an exam agency, not a curriculum. Sadly many parents are sold IEB as a curriculum by some schools.

It's my view that it points to one of 2 things: i) something wrong with the paper and its pre-moderation or ii) the teaching. Considering that the teaching could not have been generally bad, option (i) is more probable

@Lesufi @UmalusiSA It's time to question the whole idea of giving students a standard exam and later adjusting their marks, whether upwards or downwards. Why should a student be penalised for writing a paper well? If the paper was checked properly and teaching done well, then this shouldn't arise?
