Inflammation Triggers Repetitive Behaviors in ASD and OCD
A new study shows that chronic brain inflammation can trigger repetitive behaviors by overactivating NMDA glutamate receptors.
In mice with a mutated NLRP3 gene, inflammation caused microglia to release the cytokine IL-1β, which overstimulated these receptors and led to anxiety and meaningless, repetitive actions.
Administering memantine, an Alzheimer’s drug, or interleukin-1RA, a rheumatoid arthritis treatment, normalized receptor activity and reduced these behaviors.
This suggests a clear pathway from inflammation to behavioral symptoms.
Both drugs are FDA-approved, raising the possibility of repurposing them to treat repetitive behavior in ASD and OCD.
The findings offer a promising new direction for understanding and treating repetitive behavioral disorders.
