OSUN STATE: LET THE PEOPLE CHOOSE, LET PEACE PREVAIL

As we approach the upcoming election in Osun State, I wish to draw the attention of Nigerians, our institutions, political actors, the diplomatic community, international observers, and all friends of Nigeria across the world to the solemn responsibility before us.

Osun belongs to its people. Therefore, I call on the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, political parties, candidates, government institutions, civil society organisations, religious and traditional leaders, the media, and every stakeholder to act with the highest degree of neutrality, professionalism, and restraint.

The people of Osun must be allowed to vote freely, safely, and without intimidation. Their votes must be counted transparently, protected faithfully, and announced according to the genuine will of the electorate.

To those within Osun State, I appeal for peace. Do not allow politicians to turn your neighbours, friends, and communities against each other. Do not destroy your state in the name of winning an election. Nigeria is bigger than any candidate, and Osun is greater than any political party.

To those outside Osun- politicians, supporters, influencers, and financiers- I urge you to exercise restraint. Do not import violence, intimidation, or desperation into a state whose people have the constitutional right to choose their leaders peacefully.

To our security agencies, your loyalty must be to Nigeria and the Constitution, not to any political party or individual. Your duty is to protect every voter equally.

To INEC, the credibility of this election must be safeguarded from the preparatory stages to accreditation, voting, collation, and declaration. Every irregularity must be addressed seriously, and every legitimate vote must count.

And to the international community, diplomatic missions, and election observers: please monitor Osun closely. Your presence, vigilance, and principled observation can bolster confidence in our democratic process. Nigeria welcomes genuine partnerships in the protection of democracy, peace, and the rule of law.

Let us remember that democracy is not merely about who wins. Democracy is about whether the people are truly allowed to choose.

Let Osun demonstrate to Nigeria, and indeed the world, that political competition can be intense without degenerating into violence; that disagreement can exist without hatred; and that power can change hands through ballots rather than blood.

Let every vote count. Let every voter be protected. Let every legitimate result be respected. And above all, let peace reign in Osun State.

Nigeria is watching. Africa is watching. The world is watching.

Let us provide them with a democratic process worthy of the Nigerian people.

Today, I was reminded that the childhood trauma, of being isolated and driven away, that I went through is still underlying.
It took me today to a dark place and laid bare all I had to endure and fought. I remember battling adults who tried their best to make me feel unworthy or break me.

I am here today, unbroken and having earned everything through grit and the grace of God.
I am a survivor of many horrors and and in spite of all that was done to me, i stayed put and in their faces.

That girl that was assumed would end up in the ghetto with nothing to herself or her name has become a household name that stares at everyone's face and reminds everyone that the circumstances of our birth will not forever define us.

It is possible to grow above and beyond the circumstances of your birth. Do not allow anyone to define you nor allow anyone to disrespect or denigrate you. You are human and deserving of respect. No one person is more than another.

Today, I felt the tears that should have been cried over 4 decades ago finally unlock themselves and pour themselves out. I didn't even know that they still remained there. I thought in fighting those battles decades ago that I had overcome them. I didn't know the little girl that had to be defiant in the face of everything that was done to break her, still needed a warm hug. It's okay!

I am once again more resolved than ever to help birth that Nigeria, where human dignity would be at the forefront of all that we do.

When you see me fight, I fight for that little girl whose childhood was taken away from her as she had to protect herself and her siblings and sometimes her parents and became an adult way before her time.

Poverty made me nameless, faceless, and voiceless. I have had to fight many battles to have a name, a face, and a voice.

Today, I didn't fight back for myself. I finally realised I didn't need to. I am okay.

My fight now is for everyone out there whom poverty has made nameless, faceless, and voiceless.

A Nigeria where the child of nobody will be treated as somebody and can become somebody without knowing anybody is my goal.

“Nigerians are not worth fighting for.” I hear that every now and then, and I’ve always disbelieved it.

Yesterday, you proved me right. You all are the reason my detention by @HQNigerianArmy lasted ‘only’ three days. I’m a free man today because of your social media engagements with #FreeFisayoNow and the publications/broadcasts by the traditional media. And I can prove it.

After my arrest at about 2am on Wednesday, I was grilled by different levels of the Army until deep into the night. I didn’t return to my cell until at least 11pm on Wednesday. My case was then forwarded to a superior office that was to interrogate me on Thursday.

Surprisingly, Thursday was uneventful; from morning until night, this office never sent for me. I soon learnt the Army would take “as long as it wanted” to conduct their “investigation” just to establish that I was indeed an investigative journalist.

To my utmost surprise, on Friday morning, at about 11am or thereabouts, I was retrieved from my cell for transfer to the Military Intelligence Brigade (MIB). It was during the transfer that someone who ran into me asked to know my name, after which they said: “You’re the one; you’re in the news.”

Without your pressure, I’d still be in that cell by now, away from civilisation and held incommunicado. So, yes, my freedom is your freedom. This victory exists because of you, you and you. Thank you!
