Not a one-time thing. A strategy built over years.
Here's everything I've learnt across 3-4 years of travel funded almost entirely by credit card points. 🧵👇
This didn't start with a points obsession.
It started with normal life, buying gold, renovating a home, big annual bills, regular monthly expenses and some referrals (AMEX). I just made sure those rupees went on the right cards.
4-8 years of everyday spending quietly became a travel fund I didn't even realise I was building.
I never chased every card on the market.
I focused on 3-4 cards - AMEX, AXIS, and ICICI for points. Each had a clear role. I understood exactly how each one worked, the transfer partners, the sweet spots, where points moved and where they didn't.
Build an ecosystem you actually understand.
That's the whole game.
Most people spread themselves across 6-7 cards trying to maximise every category.
Do the opposite. Pick 2-3 cards and go deep.
3 cards used above were - AXIS Magnus Burgundy, AMEX Platinum Travel, ICICI EPM (for Domestic)
Understand the transfer partners. Understand how points expire, compound, and move.
Depth beats breadth. Every single time.
The three-step rule I live by:
Earn well → Real income, good cards. Accumulated patiently over the years.
Spend well → Focus on the big moments, home renovation, gold, large annual expenses and let the points build naturally from there. Use vouchers etc. for 2x-5x and 14-28% rewards
Redeem well → Don't burn points on bad redemptions just because you're sitting on a balance.
The last step is where most people leave the most money on the table.
The worst mistake? Redeeming points for cashback or shopping vouchers because you're impatient. A point redeemed for ₹0.25 cashback is the exact same point that could've been a Business class seat worth ₹3.
My points came from 4-8 years of real spends.
Not manufactured. Not gamed - Gold. Home renovation. Travel. Regular monthly life... The points were a byproduct of spending well, not the goal. That shift in framing changes everything.
Because you treated it like a long-term strategy from day one.
Build the ecosystem. Trust the process.
Redeem with patience. 🌍
