Cooch Behar, West Bengal: Clashes erupted between DYFI and BJP workers near Panchanan Burman Hall, with violence also reported in the Torsa Bridge area. DYFI alleged that BJP workers vandalised property and assaulted its members as they arrived from Dinhata to attend the organisation's 59th Foundation Day programme. A petrol pump near the clash site was also affected during the incident.

We remember Safdar Hashmi–firebrand communist playwright, lyricist, actor and director, and a founding member of the Jana Natya Manch (Janam). Comrade Safdar was attacked and brutally assaulted by Congress goons armed with guns and blunt weapons in Jhandapur in Ghaziabad on January 1, 1989, while performing a reworked version of the street play ‘Halla Bol’ (Raise Hell) with Janam in support of trade union leader Ramanand Jha, who was contesting as the CPI(M) candidate in the elections to the Ghaziabad City Council. Comrade Ram Bahadur was shot dead by the goons and Comrade Safdar succumbed to head injuries in a New Delhi hospital the next day, on January 2. He was 34 years old.

‘Halla Bol’ was originally prepared and performed in support of the historic Seven-day strike of November 1988, when 1.3 million workers across Delhi, Ghaziabad and Faridabad struck work. Less than 48 hours after Comrade Safdar's death, on the morning of January 4, 1989, Janam, led by Moloyashree Hashmi, went back to the site of the attack and completed the play that had been interrupted because of the attack. Janam’s performance was an incredible act of commitment to the people. It was also a way of saying that violence can silence individuals, but not the collective.
