In his 1995 essay "Ur-Fascism" (Eternal Fascism), Italian writer Umberto Eco described 14 common traits of fascism.

He explained that fascism is not one fixed system but a dangerous mix of ideas that can appear in different forms, even in democracies.

Key Traits of Ur-Fascism :

Cult of Tradition — Blindly glorifying the past and rejecting modern ideas.

Action for Action’s Sake — Valuing quick action without thinking or discussion.

Disagreement is Treason — Anyone who criticizes or questions is seen as a traitor.

Fear of Difference — Promoting racism, hatred of immigrants, or fear of “others”.

Frustrated Middle Class — Exploiting the fears and anger of ordinary people facing economic troubles.

Obsession with a Plot — Constantly talking about enemies (both inside and outside the country).

Life is Struggle — Seeing life as constant war; peace is viewed as weakness.

Contempt for the Weak — Looking down on the vulnerable and glorifying the strong.

Selective Populism — Claiming to speak for “the people” while the leader actually decides everything.

Newspeak — Using simple, limited language to stop people from thinking deeply or criticizing.

I travelled through Great Nicobar today.

These are the most extraordinary forests I have ever seen in my life. Trees older than memory. Forests that took generations to grow.

The people on this island are equally beautiful - both the adivasi communities and the settlers - but they are being robbed of what is rightfully theirs.

The government calls what it is doing here a “Project.” What I have seen is not a project. It is millions of trees marked for the axe. It is 160 square kilometres of rainforest condemned to die. It is communities that have been ignored while their homes have been snatched away.

This is not development. This is destruction dressed in development’s language.

So I will say it plainly, and I will keep saying it: what is being done in Great Nicobar is one of the biggest scams and gravest crimes against this country’s natural and tribal heritage in our lifetime.

It must be stopped. And it can be stopped - if Indians choose to see what I have seen.

• What PM/HM say ≠ what’s actually written in the Bill
• If you keep talking about 50%, why isn’t it in the law? Words mean nothing without backing
• Govt now gets to pick & choose the census, on what basis?
• The 2001 constitutional freeze is removed and replaced with nothing
• Who controls the Delimitation Commission? Who appoints them? Why is it beyond judicial review?
• Is this effectively punishing Southern states for controlling population?
• And what’s the point of debate after the Bill is already notified?
