#Satluj on #ZEE5 presents a one-sided, dramatized narrative on Jaswant Singh Khalra and the 1990s Punjab insurgency. While it highlights and pushes a selective agenda that erases critical context, relies on unverified claims, and completely ignores the full scale of Khalistani militancy terror. Documented facts the film conveniently misses.

1. The movie heavily relies on Khalra’s alleged “Laal Diary” detailing mass killings, but this diary has never been publicly produced or independently verified. Claims rest on partial cremation logs from a few districts not comprehensive proof.

2. It assumes all “unidentified/unclaimed” bodies were innocent Sikhs, but this is a huge leap. In the chaos of insurgency, bodies were often damaged, unrecognizable, or carried no papers. Militants frequently used disguises and fake IDs. Many could have been militants killed in encounters, non-Sikhs, or victims of other circumstances not automatic proof of being innocent sikhs.

3. The film pushes a dramatic 25,000 disappearances/cremations figure, yet verified records (like 2,097 in Amritsar district) don’t support statewide extrapolation. Not all cases were “disappearances” many linked to documented militant encounters.

4. Punjab Police later discovered numerous cases where individuals had actually fled abroad (to Canada, UK, and elsewhere) but their families back home claimed they were “disappeared” or killed by police to fraudulently claim death benefits and compensation. Why does the movie completely miss this angle that undermines many “missing persons” claims?

5. Most glaringly, #Satluj completely erases the terror unleashed by Khalistan militants: indiscriminate bombings, targeted killings, and the Hindu exodus from Punjab. Over 1,700 Punjab Police officers were killed, along with thousands of civilians. It ignores prominent politicians assassinated by Khalistanis, including Akali Dal leader Sant Harchand Singh Longowal (killed in 1985 after signing the peace accord), former Finance Minister Balwant Singh (gunned down in 1990), and Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh (assassinated in a 1995 suicide bombing by Babbar Khalsa-linked militants). Why airbrush these moderate voices?

6. “Unclaimed” bodies don’t automatically equal fake encounters. In the fear and stigma of insurgency, families avoided claiming bodies linked to militants. Many unidentified cases were later tied to confirmed terrorists via intelligence. Police cremations followed wartime procedures amid chaos not conspiracy.
Intra-Sikh violence was rampant, with militants targeting moderates, rivals, and perceived traitors.

7. Khalra’s own links to the Akali Dal Human Rights Wing raise questions about purely neutral activism during opposition periods. The film simplifies it to pure victims vs. evil state. Did khalra ever raised voice on any hindu killing ?

8. Emotional scenes and strong performances can’t hide the altered reality, added drama, and one-sided framing that turns complex history into propaganda.

9. The killings happened on other side for hindus the movie remains silent. Mumbai may be seeing aggressive action against illegal encroachments under Devendra Fadnavis and his team, but the bigger question is: are we really solving the problem, or simply shifting it outside city limits?

Because while encroachments are being demolished in Mumbai, several leaders and local networks from his own party from corporators to MPs are allegedly enabling, expanding or benefiting from similar encroachments in the outer MMR.

Almost all the locations seen in these images fall under areas governed by double-engine or triple-engine governments. So the excuse of “lack of coordination” does not work here.

Outer MMR belts like Titwala, Malangad, Ambivli, Ambernath and several other areas are witnessing a shocking rise in illegal slums, illegal buildings and completely unplanned settlements.

Many of these places were vacant lands barely 5 to 8 years ago. Today, they are being swallowed by encroachments, land grabbing, illegal construction and open violations of town planning norms.

There are Atleast 300+ illegal shops just between Katai and Badlapur

This is not urban development. This is organized urban collapse.

Encroachments are not being eliminated they are being exported to the outer MMR.

The question is simple: are we removing illegal encroachments, or creating a new illegal city outside Mumbai?
