And honestly, when you look at how every election cycle suddenly becomes about foreigners, border fences, spaza shops and street marches instead of unemployment, corruption, collapsing municipalities and load shedding… you start to understand what he meant.

Poor South Africans and poor mostly black foreign nationals are turned against each other while politicians collect votes, blue lights and luxury benefits 😩

Mbeki’s point was simple: when leaders fail to solve economic problems, it becomes easier to create a convenient enemy.

The real danger is when frustration is weaponised for political gain instead of building real solutions for everyone living in the country.
