PIRATES OF THE CARREBEAN is obviously a masterpiece, but in retrospect I feel very lucky to have grown up when visual effects started to cook but productions still used huge sets, shot in exotic locations and had to rely on human stunt work in camera. we've rarely had it better
Replaying Arkham asylum, and one of its biggest strengths that I feel was forgotten in later installments is that it feels just like another Batman adventure. This isn’t some extra ordinary story, it’s just another bout for him. It feels so authentic to the comics.
they removed all the best lines 😭 no “they’re gold no matter how you turn them” no “bastard blood shed at war” no “the rats play when the cat is gone”... they’re allergic to good writing
This may be stating the obvious, but the fact that the "aliens" in Crystal Skull are actually interdimensional beings is implicitly important to the plot.
The implication is that they are actually more like a single being from a plane of existence that has access to extra dimensions. So when they came to our world with whatever technology the flying saucer represents, they simply looked to us like thirteen separate beings. That's why Spalko describes them as a "hive mind" (echoing the ants earlier).
And when the conquistador Orellana cut off the head of one of them and stole its crystal skull, he injured the hive mind in a way that prevented it from recombining and returning to its own higher-dimensional domain.
And that's why after the skull is returned and the whole hive-mind/flying saucer complex becomes operational again, the skeletons start stacking on top of one another like cross-sectional slices from an MRI scan. It's like if you were to travel to a two-dimensional universe and somehow "translate" yourself in a way that allowed you to be comprehensible to and interface with the two-dimensional inhabitants. You might appear to them as a bunch of separate, two-dimensional cross-sections of yourself acting in a strangely coordinated manner.
