We are now officially into year 5 of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic/endemic.
I gave a lecture to my virology class this Fall about the history of the pandemic through the lens of viral genotypes.
I thought I would share that lecture as a thread.
This is a long one.

We have nurses & junior doctors on strike & consultants potentially joining them very soon. Lets talk about inflation & pay. How to fix this car crash (& perhaps more importantly, how NOT to). Please read full 🧵 to end and share / RT
Thank you to my friends and colleagues and people that I do not know for your kind words and congratulations. Amongst all the challenges of working within health care, there are always bright sparks that lift you up. Blessings to you all
COG-UK has pivoted from being a large-scale distributed sequencing and data analysis effort to a consortium that increasingly facilitated pandemic-relevant genomics research and training.

Reflection: There was a huge divide btwn what experts/advisors said & what UK govt often did. Experts/science advisors looked at latest data & presented advice. Ministers looked at publicity angle & some looked at how to make money for friends through PPE/testing contracts.

@a_m_mastroianni Thanks @a_m_mastroianni for this.
I read your post with great enthusiasm including every reference within it. And to top it, I presented it today at our journal club which usually encourages peer reviewed articles…..just saying. It was fun.
“Illness is neither an indulgence for which people have to pay, nor an offence for which they should be penalised, but a misfortune, the cost of which should be shared by the community.”

Please RT if you believe the NHS is worth fighting for 💙
So this is the payslip of a doctor 2 yrs out of medschool working in the #NHS in 2005. A doctor working the same job 2 years out of med school makes the SAME amount of money today. With worse conditions, ++ more patient load & increased complexity! Makes NO sense!😵💫😵💫 #NHSStrikes
Last Friday a letter published in the @MetroUK stated that NHS laboratories were "overstaffed with unproductive people." IBMS Chief Executive David Wells was impelled to reply: https://t.co/8lNAUawUmk
Why are 'junior' doctors balloting on strike action? The true state of pay and conditions: a thread. All data and sources accurate to the best of my knowledge. Infographics provided.
We are now in a position to evaluate the impact of Covid vaccines. Overall, I believe they were a success, actually well beyond what most informed people probably anticipated in 2020.
