Having collectively experienced an extreme weather event — when we know climate change is likely only going to make these storms more frequent and severe — leaves many of us with shared feelings of grief, trauma, fear and loss.
But what we don't share is accountability.
Yesterday, after hearing concerns and sending a note to @dennyking, I checked in at provincially-run Huntingdon Court seniors' housing complex where they had no power. These are elderly folks, many with serious health issues in the cold and dark. #peipoli 1/2
A timely piece for anyone curious about historical precedents, climate adaptations, and provincial responses after Hurricane #Fiona#FionaPEI -- thanks @alanmaceachern for sharing this important chapter of PEI #weatherhistory!
Being the giant nerd that I am I have started a google doc with links to all of the #PEI#Fiona supports that I am aware of. I will continue to update it as any new programs are announced. You can find it here: https://t.co/fo1aDCfvEn Feel free to let me know what's missing.

Gaps? Here’s what gaps look like @dennyking - NO ONE from your govt checked on seniors in PEI housing for NINE days - if not for kindness of volunteers they would have starved to death or died from lack of meds #peipoli
1st question of Fall Sitting QP in @peileg should be: “Why were a group of 20 somethings at @ChtownMutualAid able to organize themselves, mobilize 100’s of volunteers, and deliver more impactful post Fiona relief faster, more efficiently, and with better comms than gov?” #peipoli
Day #8 with no power for many. Still reports of seniors homes without power. Dark halls, leaky ceilings=slippery floors, no way to communicate, heat food. If you have a senior in your life please check on them. @InfoPEI you have 1600 units. You need to check on them! #peipoli
.@dennyking was quick to give out gift cards to make sure no tourist was left behind. It is time to show the same care and concern for Island workers. 6/6 #peipoli
Day 9 without power for 44,000+ Islanders (23,000 customers of Maritime Electric).
#NS’s outages (29,000) are almost down to the level of #PEI. NS started with half a million outages, PEI with 82,000. Fiona hit harder in PEI.

Higher Ed Leadership Tip: Good Systems, Policies, Processes, Data, and Technology are useful but they don’t make a great university. The people do. Invest more in people and let the other things make their jobs easier and more meaningful!
Day nine without power for 30,000 Islanders…if this happened in winter hundreds of people would’ve died from lack of heat by now. Truly hoping this galvanizes the govt to develop an actual emergency disaster plan
A @redcrosscanada comms person emailed me Fri, saying my “negative” comments were “discouraging” volunteers.
All I did was detail my own inability + those of others to get clear info about aid for Islanders.
Perhaps focus comms energy on letting P.E.I. partners in on your plans

#PEI: 43% positivity rate. With the new testing regime, actual # of cases will be far higher than what was reported today. It’s everywhere.
A mask is such a simple and effective measure to reduce spread. No downside. But no more mandate. Individual responsibility, I guess.
