What an incredible honor, and DOOM is the only video game on the list! Congrats to DOOM devs, players, modders, and the entire games community. This one is for all of us. Thanks @GenePark@washingtonpost!
For the first time in my life, I wrote a detailed letter to my Congressman in hopes that I can get a meeting with his team about this severe problem.
While I assume nothing will come of it, we've gotta start pressing the issue for all of us. I'll continue doing everything I can!
recent events have got me playing a lot of games via GOG. it's been an incredible experience playing newer titles DRM free with no launchers, notifications, or popups. not having steam or PSN tied to a new game that just sits on my computer as itself feels so freeing
GOG has taken a shot at Sony's decision to stop making PlayStation game discs in 2028, reminding people why many PC gamers like DRM-free games.
GOG posted on X:
"Download the offline installer of any of your games on GOG, save it to a disc, and it's yours forever. You don't need a storefront's permission to play what you bought."
GOG lets you download offline installers for every game you buy.
That means you can back them up and install them anytime, even without the GOG launcher or an internet connection.
DRM-free games, once you buy them, you can keep your own copy and play it whenever you want.
Three years ago, I promised an American reader that I would translate “Megami Tensei” into English myself. In order to fulfill that promise, I am publishing this translation.
However, since contractual matters were resolved this month, my partner and I are in discussions with an overseas publisher regarding the translation. My translation is not polished enough as English. But it is faithful to the original text. I hope it will help a translator I trust understand my Japanese. And I believe that translator will turn the sequels to “Megami Tensei”—"Warrior of the Demon City” and “The End of Reincarnation”—into wonderful English novels.
Therefore, I will remove this text by the end of July. In the meantime, I hope you will take the time to savor what “Digital Devil Story” is all about.

Obsidian will continue to work on Avowed 2 | Jason Schreier
"Obsidian have a small team that was working on Avowed 2, that's going to still work on Avowed 2 even though it is canceled. While they wait for other projects like Fallout to be ready for them. Maybe in hopes of getting it uncancelled, it was actually further along than most people would guess for a sequel to a game that came out last year. So I think their hope is perhaps they'll get it so close to finish that Xbox will look at it and say "Okay you can finish and release this, it won't cost that much more to finish it".
Chinese courts have ruled that gaming accounts, in-game items, and digital purchases can be passed on to family after death, setting a major legal precedent for digital ownership.
The decisions come from several court cases over the years, with judges ruling that these digital assets have real value and should be treated like other property. In one recent case, a mother was allowed to inherit her late son’s 87 gaming accounts.
The courts also ruled that platform terms of service cannot automatically block inheritance if the law permits it. However, personal data such as private messages and chat history remain protected and are not included.
‼️ A 16-year-old Linux KVM vulnerability called Januscape (CVE-2026-53359) lets a root user inside a guest VM escape to the host on Intel and AMD x86 systems, and a proof of concept that crashes hosts is already public.
Canonical says patched Ubuntu kernels are still pending for all releases and recommends disabling nested virtualization in the meantime.
Brandon Adler Obsidian game director reacts to people "spouting off" about the studio in the wake of the layoffs
“This has been an extremely difficult week at Obsidian. Not only have I had to say goodbye to some amazing game developers, but I've had to say goodbye to some of my best friends. I truly feel for every one of them. Know that if you are looking to hire one of these former Obsidian devs, you are hiring some of the best people around - both professionally and personally.”
“Another difficult aspect is having to see a bunch of cold take artists coming out of the woodwork to talk about what Obsidian is or what it isn't. The number of times I've seen people, with no understanding of who has worked on our previous games or what they contributed, talk about how Obsidian isn't who they used to be... is staggering. Most of the time they are not just wrong, but spreading an enormous amount of misinformation.”
“In most circumstances, the people in lead or director roles are the same people that worked on games like The Outer Worlds, Pillars of Eternity, and New Vegas. Like, literally the same people. The through line from KotOR2 to our current games is pretty clear.”
“Is Obsidian the same as it was 20 years ago? No, of course not. Nothing stays the same. But the DNA at Obsidian is the same as it always was. The same DNA that created KotOR, New Vegas, NWN2, and Stick of Truth.”
“I'm extremely proud of our history and I am also excited for who we have become.”
“Just remember, when you are seeing people spouting off about Obsidian, running their mouths about who we are now vs. what we were then, you are listening to someone crow about something with zero insight into how a game is made and who contributed to our previous games.”

Microsoft has no plans to shelve id Tech
"The cuts to id Software have hit the teams that develop id Tech hard, without a doubt. But rumors that there's now virtually nobody working on the engine are false."
"Sources tell me that there remains a solid stack of expertise for id Tech across id Software itself, and Machine Games."
"I'm told Microsoft also has no plans to shift either studio forcibly to Unreal Engine, which seems to have become the default for Microsoft and many other core game makers."
Microsoft statement: “There are dozens of people working on id Tech across multiple locations. Reports that there’s only one person left in Texas are inaccurate.”
"The other rumor flying around is that id Software has shrunk to a headcount that is untenable for future self-made products, relegating them to "support studio" status. This, too, is false."
"While the cuts have been alarmingly callous, my understanding is that the remaining id Software core team is roughly the same as it was when DOOM (2016) shipped."

Dear @asha_shar@XBOX
On behalf of VGP, we would like to share our perspective as a retailer that has proudly supported the gaming industry and the Xbox brand for many years.
When Microsoft originally introduced the vision for the Xbox One with a strong emphasis on digital ownership, the response from consumers was immediate. Sony took advantage of that moment by positioning the PlayStation 4 as the console that embraced physical game ownership, and history shows how influential that decision became.
Today, the market is shifting once again. Sony appears to be moving further toward a digital-first future, creating an opportunity for Microsoft to differentiate itself by becoming the industry's strongest advocate for physical media.
We encourage Microsoft to revisit Project Helix and make physical games a core part of its strategy. There remains a passionate and dedicated audience that values collecting, preserving, lending, trading, and truly owning the games they purchase. As a retailer, we see that demand every day.
The saying "what goes around comes around" feels especially relevant. Years ago, Sony benefited by championing physical ownership while Microsoft moved toward digital. Today, Microsoft has an opportunity to reverse that narrative and become the company that stands behind consumer choice.
Many gamers still look back on the Xbox 360 era as the golden age of Xbox. The platform was synonymous with innovation, great games, and strong relationships with both players and retail partners. We believe Microsoft can recapture much of that goodwill by reaffirming its commitment to physical gaming and by bringing Project Helix to market.
As one of Microsoft's retail partners, we believe a renewed investment in physical media would benefit consumers, retailers, publishers, and Xbox itself. We respectfully encourage you and your leadership team to consider this opportunity and help usher Xbox back to the position of industry leadership that so many fans remember.
Thank you for your time and consideration. We look forward to seeing Xbox continue to innovate while supporting the millions of players who still value physical game ownership.
Sincerely
VGP
