"...because they have never seen a female orthopaedic surgeon... it’s harder for them to imagine that’s what they might be able to do.” @AOA_President Annette Holian #AOA21 Trainee Annabel Probert on the increase in women pursuing orthopaedics https://t.co/SkcpcmnGn3
I had another sad call with a student from another medical school the other day
her “Everyone keeps telling me not to do ortho”
me “who in the world is everyone?”
her: “Oh, just some of the surgeons and medicine attendings, lots of people, really...they tell me I’m too small”.
1/ September is Women in Medicine Month 👩⚕️🩺✂️ @Surgia_Griffith prides itself on diversity and inclusiveness! We have organised some exciting events for this month!
Well done @teresaliew_ & @UQMS for holding an amazing face to face conference abiding by a solid covid safe plan! Thank you to all the amazing speakers and panelists! @cathmcortho@LiangRhea
@drjanel@LiangRhea Thank you, the SMO took me aside after the ward round and asked me if I was ok. I work as a physio on the weekends and have heard the “where are you from? No where are you really from” then and again but this was a first as a med student #notoracism
For female medical & interns interested in surgery: you'll probably be told at some point that you're not strong enough, you're too feminine, you don't look like a surgeon.Every female surgeon has heard this at some point. You can do this! @AMWADoctors@WomenSurgeons@aoa1887
We are definitely feeling inspired from the events of International Women's Day this weekend! 👩⚕️👭 Our aim for Surgia this year is to encourage diversity within surgery, not only just for women but transcending to those of various backgrounds.
We loved listening to @LiangRhea talk about the the little 'l' in leadership - hoping to translate this into how we run Surgia this year! #GoldCoastRepresent
