A few thoughts on the season so far:

It was always going to be a struggle in the window with us needing to sell and being in the loan and free market. I’m hoping we’ve now got ourselves in a position where we are aligned with the rules and can start attacking the market with only one or two big sales over the next few windows.

However, while I think it’s very unlikely we get near play offs due to the lack of balance in the squad, it’s still really important we don’t throw away this season. We need to build a style of play and system, like we did from 2016-2020, which the academy can follow and allows us to recruit specific profiles which can slot straight in.

So far we’ve not seen a style or system. It sounds like a criticism of Wilder but the loss of Knill combined with our three best players was always going to make that hard. Now the window is shut any coaching time between now and after the international break I hope would be used developing that style and system. I’d opt for a 4-3-3 where we try and control possession. We shouldn’t be playing long ball with the midfielders we’ve got who are all comfortable in possession.

I also think a major positive this season would be giving our young players a lot of game time. The likes of Seriki, Peck, Arblaster and Oné are our biggest assets. If they do well and one or two go for a good fee next summer, hopefully we can invest that into five or six players to build a much more competitive and balanced squad. 

On the recruitment side, I think it’s understandable Wilder has gone back for BBD, Hamza, Phillips as well as experience with Doherty and Kitching. A lack of budget means we have to get it right and a group of players who are decent at the level but also bring a lot behind the scenes was the safest and probably best option we could’ve gone with this year. However, next summer we need to broaden our recruitment. Wilder mentioned we looked abroad and I hope we do that more. Focus any fees on U24 players who can develop and sell for more in the future while only signing proven experience on loan or for free. 

I’ve got no doubt Wilder will fix it, but from now we need to stop looking short term and start looking at the medium/long term future of the club. Building a system and good approach to recruitment. We need to take inspiration from clubs like Norwich who have sold good players every season and used that money to sign multiple good ones⚔️
