SIPRI Yearbook 2026 now vindicates what I have been documenting for years: India has moved from a so-called recessed, de-mated posture toward operational nuclear warhead deployment and peacetime mating with launchers.
12 warheads are now assessed as deployed with operational forces. The “reliable minimum deterrent” narrative just took a hit.

As part of his ongoing Visiting Research Fellowship at International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) London, Dr Sufian Ullah’s article titled “War in Iran and the nuclear non-proliferation regime: a perspective from Pakistan” is published by IISS Online Analysis. MCE Insights | Why Does Crisis Stability Remain a Wild Goose Chase in South Asia?
Dr. Sufian Ullah & Ms. Safia Mansoor | The Fletcher Forum of World Affairs
Since South Asia’s overt #nuclearization, the region has avoided #fullscalewar but continues to face recurring crises. #Crisisstability remains elusive due to doctrinal gaps, rising counterforce tendencies, rapid technological militarization, weak crisis-management mechanisms, and an expanding arms race. The article concludes that enduring stability requires sustained strategic dialogue, acknowledgment of mutual vulnerabilities, and a shared framework for strategic stability.
