Why is the world silent over the incarcerated Hurriyat leader Yasin Malik? I have just gone through his letter, and it made me deeply sad.
In my legal practice, I have known many imprisoned people who are on death row or serving life sentences, but very few have ever set their wives free from the chains of a relationship they themselves can no longer fully live or sustain.
Only a man with great humanity and moral courage can understand that a woman has her own desires, needs, and right to live her life, and that she should not remain bound to a relationship in which he himself is unable to fulfil the responsibilities of a partner.
This is what true love, mutual respect, and partnership mean. This is also what marriage should mean. Sometimes, letting someone go is the deepest form of love one can offer to a partner.
Human rights organisations should also make efforts to facilitate a meeting between Yasin Malik and his wife and daughter in prison in India.
