People don’t realize that some of us really idolized CR7 for a long time. As a Man United fan, CR7 gave me a lot of good days. I smiled, I enjoyed football, I was in awe of his talent as the young hungry boy from Madeira.

Whether he started or came on as a sub, he played his heart out and gave the team his all.

Then he went to Real Madrid and I also let go of him as my fave. As a Barca fan, he was a player I could not love. Don’t get me wrong, he did destroy us every now & again and his talent was never in question but overall he wasn’t my cup of tea.

Between Madrid & Juventus he broke all kinds of records and did all manner of impossible things. Therefore his achievements & success in football are never in question.

The thing that many of us “CR7 haters” abhor is the manner in which he feels like before him there was no football and after him there will be no football. That’s just disrespectful & unprofessional. Portugal achieved more success on the big stage in 1966 than they ever did during CR7’s entire career. To water all that down and say before him Portugal was no where is just ridiculous.

And then to get dumped out of the World Cup and say he is not bothered because he already had trophies is to just disrespect his team mates. Other players get dumped out of the World Cup and start by apologizing & saying they should have done better. They openly send apologies to their countrymen & say they let their teammates down even though they themselves might have put in a shift. They don’t remind everyone how they didn’t need to win to prove anything. They don’t talk about how many trophies they have. That’s so selfish & narcissistic. Mourn with your brothers. Your teammates are the other side wallowing in sadness and you’re this side reminding people of how many trophies you have? And you wonder why there is dislike for him within the Portuguese squad?

CR7’s career has been great. We might never see another like him for eons. He’s one of the most competitive sportsmen the world has ever seen. But he’s not the greatest human being and his like-ability isn’t that high. Statements like “I am the best in the world” or “I have won everything” or “winning the Euros is just like winning the World Cup” or “I don’t need to win the World Cup” only go to show that he does not have humility in his arsenal of weapons.

As for CR7 diehards, you must embrace the fact that you can love CR7, he can be your favorite player, and still admit that there is another who is better - the world won’t crumble. Or maybe it will crumble for you - but that’s only because you are narrow minded & won’t accept a truth that is right in front of you.

Anyway as the Portuguese say “Um bom dançarino sabe quando sair de cena.” Which loosely translates to “A good dancer knows when to leave the stage”.
