Ever wondered why LGBTQ+ starts with the letter L instead of G?
Many people don't know the story behind it. One explanation is connected to how lesbian women stood by gay men during the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s, when so many people turned their backs on them.
Lesbians Supported Gay Men During the AIDS Crisis Through:
1. Caring for Those Who Were Abandoned: During the crisis, many gay men were rejected by their families, while some hospital staff refused to treat them because of fear and stigma. Lesbian women stepped in to care for sick men, offering support as nurses, caregivers and friends.
2. Organizing and Fighting for Change: Lesbian activists organized support networks, fundraisers and advocacy groups. They also joined protests and activist movements that pressured governments and medical institutions to respond to the crisis.
3. Organizing Blood Drives: When gay men faced restrictions on donating blood, lesbian women organized blood drives to help people affected by the crisis and support their community.
Why the L Comes First:
Over time, activists began using LGBT instead of GLBT, and the acronym later expanded to LGBTQ+. Lesbian activism and solidarity during the AIDS crisis are often recognized as part of the reason for putting the L first, although the history behind the change is more complex than one single event.
Women are really good people 👌
I was withdrawing money when someone behind me started talking about gay people.
I ignored him.
Then he said something specifically about me.
I turned around.
He pointed at my bracelet.
He had been watching me.
I finished what I was doing and immediately walked into the nearest busy place.
I didn’t count my money outside.
I didn’t stop to argue.
I didn’t even look back.
I just kept moving.
Later, my friend told me: You did exactly what you needed to do.
And that’s the lesson.
You don’t need to prove you’re fearless.
You need to get home safe.
Safety first. Pride always 🏳️🌈.
