When Rio Ferdinand’s wife Rebecca was diagnosed with cancer for a second time in 2015, their children were still only nine, six and four.

She had already been through treatment once and they thought it was behind them.

This time it had spread to her bones.

Within weeks, Rio was sitting the children down and trying to explain that their mum was not going to be coming home.

“Mum’s not going to be able to get out of here.”

“She’s going to be a star.”

Rio held them while they cried, knowing he was losing Rebecca as well but also knowing that from that point on, he was the parent who had to somehow get them through it.

Rebecca kept going long enough to see their daughter Tia turn four.

By then her body was shutting down, but when the birthday cake came out she still picked Tia up so she could blow out the candles.

It was the last time the children saw their mum fully conscious.

Rebecca sadly passed away on the 1st of May 2015.

She was just 34 years old.

For Rio, there was his own grief to deal with, but almost immediately there were three children who still needed everything their mum had always done for them.

That was when he realised how little he actually knew about that side of their lives.

During his football career, everything had been organised for him.

Rio had thought taking the children to school meant he was doing his bit.

After she passed away, he started realising how much happened before they ever got out of the door.

“Where are their shoes?”

“Where are their clothes?”

“Where are their bags?”

There were play dates to organise.

Beds had to be made the way the children were used to.

He had to learn how to cook, do the laundry and even plait Tia’s hair.

At one point he stood in front of the washing machine trying to work it out.

“I know what you do, but I don’t know how you work.”

The harder part was helping the children understand what had happened when Rio had barely started dealing with it himself.

For a long time, Rio found it difficult to talk about Rebecca with them.

He had grown up believing emotion was something you kept in, and football had only reinforced it.

Eventually he realised the children needed to see him grieve as well.

“I’ve got to show emotion, especially for my children’s sake.”

“If you need to cry, cry.”

They started using a memory jar.

The children would write down memories of their mum, songs she liked or things they remembered doing together, and put them inside.

It gave them a way of talking about Rebecca without every conversation beginning with her passing.

Before Rebecca passed away, she had spoken to her own mum about what would happen to the children without her.

Her mum was worried about all of them.

Rebecca was not worried about Rio.

“Rio will be a perfect mummy and daddy.”

“You don’t have to worry.”
