Hi, I am Sui - Just a shy guy who wants to keep the software running, often against the wishes of mega-corporations.

Again to be precise - there are 4 categories for wallpapers. Scenes as far as I understand you create by editing images and applying various transformations - they are safe. Videos - which you just upload (and sometimes people use it to share porn) - also safe. Web - which is just a website that you display as wallpaper - probably safe? And then the actual dangerous one - which is "Application", which is just an exe file that you run - always very dangerous. First 3 are unlikely to be ever a problem, the 4th one is just WTF and I don't know why they'd even allow those.
I don't know how is this even a news to anyone. Had a look at Kasperksy's website - big shock - what do you mean running an "exe" based wallpapers is used as attack vector. 🙄
If you don't know, there is a ton of pirated porn and games on Wallpaper Engine's workshop that just pretend to be wallpapers, but in reality it's just a way of certain "regions" share illegal content. So it's not surprising it's used as an attack vector - you are literally running a random exe on your PC, when you download those wallpapers.
Steam users have been warned about malware being distributed through Wallpaper Engine
Researchers found hackers hiding malicious software in downloads shared on the platform
@TheTechnixian In a way, true - but I think it's also because this has been somewhat popular way of sharing hentai and some difficult to get games, which makes it very easy to "attach" some trojans to it and infect a bunch of users.
Not really, because it's only "application" wallpapers that's the problem. And Wallpaper Engine by default has that option disabled.
For me, that option just shouldn't exist, but even if you use it, Wallpaper Engine still warns you that you are running a different program. So if at that point, a user still runs it and install "a wallpaper" with a trojan, then I don't know what to tell them.
@synaesthesiajp Videogame is art, except it is subject to the most brutal rules of the world: it needs to be sustainable from its sales, and that’s fine. The problem is when the business world expects 10x or 100x so they can pay huge bonuses to an army of execs who don’t contribute to anything
Yet again Microsoft proves me right in what I said. They can announce a bunch of cool games and then proceed to kill every cool project and studio so that only generic, boring slop releases from Xbox division.
Xbox is closing down Hellblade creator Ninja Theory. Compulsion Games and Double Fine are also in “active negotiations” about spinning off https://t.co/2tvywBVnF0
@Sinnoware At this point, I have almost an adverse reaction when I hear a "must play" - have not touched Hollow Knight, Expedition 33... but then I realize "Oh hey, I can emulate Perfect Dark: Zero - surely it's not as bad as some say" *it was way worse than people say*
Alert. Ataki na polskie konta Gmail.
❌ Dostęp do skrzynek próbuje uzyskać grupa hackerska związana z rządem Białorusi (ID grupy: UNC1151/Ghostwriter)
✅ Widzisz takiego maila - zignoruj go
Sadly no. Even custom ones can be extremely heavy - a friend of mine has a model that eats up up 3 GB of VRAM for textures. And her toggles eat most of it.
And customizable ones don't necesserly have to be heavier than custom ones - certain riggers realized the issue with Live2D and its toggles that everything is loaded into VRAM, so they split up customization options into swappable textures and wrote programs that allow you to pick the look, which in turn builds up a folder with textures by picking the sets.
Ironically - even assets can be very VRAM heavy - at one point, I bought a blanket Live2D model and that alone was eating up 341.33 MB of VRAM.
It really all depends on how aware of VRAM usage riggers and artists are. And a lot of the times, they just aren't or naively think that because it's 2D it won't be very heavy and they can just output an 8K texture. Doesn't change the fact, these textures on PC really should be using BC7, but VTS natively doesn't support it.
I was suppose to post this, but I forgot. On Sunday @esamarathon announced their schedule. They approved 2 of my runs - System Shock 2 and then a garbage that is Hellforces. Can't wait to show off those runs! Maybe this time we can actually crash the bad game 🤞
