Adanis were never interested to build the Tajpur Port. Mamata Banerjee knew it very well. But both played along ! Why?

Adani Power Jharkhand Ltd (APJL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Power Ltd, entered into an agreement with the Bangladesh Govt to supply electricity generated at Godda in Jharkhand to the Bangladesh electricity grid.

However, the problem with the plan was that the supply lines and Transmission Towers had to pass through West Bengal, specifically through Murshidabad.

The mango and lychee orchards were in the way. The farmers, mostly belonging to the minority community objected to this plan.

So, a deal was cracked between Adani & Mamata Banerjee. Adani had to show up at the BGBS event, sing praises of the State Govt & the CM's "visionary leadership" in order to paint WB as a lucrative destination for corporate investment. In return the State Govt would facilitate the passing of Electricity-bearing cables through several areas of WB, including Farakka in Murshidabad and Malda, before finally entering Bangladesh.

Who knows, assessing the tainted record of corrupt State Govt, there might have been any unaccounted financial incentive at play to generate State Govt's interest?

The declaration of the Tajpur Port Project was also an integral part of the plan. But in reality it was an illusion created to divert attention from what was about to happen.

The Mamata Police unleashed unimaginable brutality on the minority community farmers, whose livelihoods depend on these orchards. The local law enforcement agency and administration acted on the Adani Group’s behalf and didn't hesitate to shed the blood of farmers who were protesting peacefully. The so called 'farmer friendly' Mamata Banerjee looked the other way when the protesting farmers were thrashed.

Ultimately, the might of the State prevailed and century-old mango and lychee orchards got devastated due to the construction of the high-tension towers. For the first time in hundreds of years, the villagers say that the area’s famed mango and lychee orchards did not yield any produce.

Now as the purpose is now solved and the quid pro quo arrangement is complete, Adani seemed to have pulled the plug from the Tajpur Port project and Mamata Banerjee is looking for new enthusiasts for the project. She had been going gung ho for the Tajpur Port project for almost a decade now, but in reality hasn't even developed a square inch of infrastructure to facilitate the same.
