Zero value.
Damage is already done.
Cyprus understands Somalia’s foreign policy is set from Turkey as of late.
I would not be surprised if Cyprus recognizes SL given its close relationship with Israel.
The idiotic photo-op call may have lasting consequences.
When you install foreign asset - to the highest positions of your government - this is what happens. #Reckless bunch.
UN member states can arrange access for guests to parts of the UN during the General Assembly, subject to tight accreditation and security arrangements during High-Level Week.
So, yes, with friends willing to sponsor and facilitate them — Netanyahu and the Israelis, presumably — the Somaliland travelling party may well get into the UN complex on Manhattan’s East Side and watch some proceedings.
And in September, delegations, officials and lobbyists crisscross the UN building and in Manhattan hotels, and receptions. There will be plenty of opportunities for photographs, but not necessarily meetings of any substance.
If in the USA they will probably also meet a couple of State Department officials or career diplomats. And may even travel a city or two to meet diaspora groups.
But the world is extraordinarily tense right now. Even leaders of major G20 countries struggle to secure meaningful bilateral meetings during UNGA week. Presidents of recognized African states or international organizations arrive in New York and sometimes barely register amid hundreds of bigger leaders and or crises competing for Washington’s and UNGA delegates’ attention.
I would venture to say all IGAD and East African states will barely meet anyone bigger than them , let alone a tahriibi-yed leader of an unrecognized enclave, smuggled into the proceedings by none other than perhaps the most unpopular politician at the event — Netanyahu!
Of course, there may be some Mickey Mouse meetings in real-world terms: a photo-op with Senator Cruz here, lunch with some magafayaal — lobbyists — there, and a feel-good luncheon with talkative-but-not-listened-to folks such as Ambassador Tibor Nagy, diplomat-pretending priest Peter Pham, Michael Rubin and others. Gavin Williamson, the British backbencher, may even trek across the Atlantic to help out with this unrealizable pet project. Some media and think-tank appearances can also be arranged and bankrolled by friends with cash.
None of this, however, will in my estimation register in U.S. policy circles.
What is more amusing is how badly some of their own people seem to be reading Washington.
The spokesman for the Somaliland president, @Huseindeyr, recently tried to sell recognition to the United States and Israel by warning that the Saudi-Türkiye-Pakistan defence agreement risked turning the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden into a sphere of:
“STRATEGIC DOMINANCE BY SUNNI MUSLIM STATES.”
He then asked:
“What strategic response do the #US, #Israel, #EU and their allies have to this emerging challenge?”
His proposed answer, naturally, was recognition of Somaliland.
He subsequently deleted the post.
The problem was not merely the rather extraordinary idea of trying to frighten Washington with “Sunni Muslim states.” Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan are all longstanding American partners; Türkiye is a NATO ally.
Worse still, apparently unbeknownst to him, President Trump was saying almost precisely the opposite.
Trump wrote after the agreement:
“Very happy to see that Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have recently, and finally, signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement.”
He called it:
“A BIG, BOLD, AND IMPORTANT FIRST STEP — WOW!”
In short, I would not say the trip will be entirely futile. Shopping will happen in New York, and when they return, my friend @khadarlooge will brief the media that their travelling party was “received at the highest levels” and accorded maqaam aad u sarreeya — as has long been the habit when secessionist leaders return from overseas trips.
And, as you guessed, the recognition project will probably be exactly where it was before they left.
And no, there will be no real itinerary to speak of.
"Somaliland grounds its territitorial claim in the borders of the former British protectorate and decades of separate institution-building. That history explains Hargeisa's position, but it cannot by itself determine the political status of communities that reject its authority." That is exactly correct...

The launch of the Somali version of my book "Between Somaliland and Puntland" (2015) with a new foreword, called "Muranka Xuduudaha" (2026) happened in a very nice way in Lasanod today, thanks to Faatix Cabdiraxmaan and his team! Aad ayaad u mahadsan tahay.
After years apart, I met my former classmate Dr Jamal Ali Hussin, a SIDAM alumnus at Al-Ghurair Mall in Dubai. It was a wonderful reunion but unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to catch up on everything as I was on travel.
I’m delighted to see Jamal is healthy, well and wise. He seemed like a man with a mission, just like the same guy I sat a class with in 1986. We were young, ambitious and eager to learn back then.
Dr Jamal, mentioned in my essay published on @Wardheernews, (https://t.co/sNJHeqw90N,
encouraged my friend Mohamed-Bile Yusuf Isse and me to pursue a CPA in the US in 1998. We didn’t disappoint him as we both eventually became Chartered Certified Accountants.
Long, healthy and enriched life, my friend.

@SeraGaid From my perspective, about that case the Court has lacked its role because they took the prosecutor's charge without further investigation and not given to the parties'same defence. However I am respecting your opinion
@SeraGaid Samira Gaid, I read all the allegations that you made about the Office of the Attorney General and the Charge against Sadia. But I think you forgot the role of this Office, because they represent the government in any case that has criminal conduct or motives.
Hosted insighful discussions this morning with Hon. Marta Temido, European Parliament Standing Rapporteur for the Horn of Africa, alongside EU delegation, on recent developments in the Region and Areas of Colloboration between 🇸🇴 & 🇪🇺.
As the father of four daughters and brother of five sisters, this picture of Sadia Moalim, captured today when her sentence of three years was being announced, hit my heart.
Justice for Sadia.
Federal Republic of Somalia reserves its sovereign right to take all lawful and necessary measures, through diplomatic, legal, and other appropriate channels, to protect its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity.
The convening of today's OPEN SESSION ON REFUGEES, INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS AND HUMANITARIAN
ASSISTANCE IN AFRICA during the month in which the international community commemorates World Refugee Day, observed annually on 20 June, has been timely and significant.
The discussion of Somalia's sub-national political landscape is quite ironic. It is said there will be an "election", yet the president has given the seats to certain candidates in the upcoming "dispensation." This is a contradiction in terms. This implies that the seats in South-West, Galmudug, and Hirshabelle are effectively owned by President @HassanSMohamud, who can easily hand them over to friends.
Subsequently, the president's party and the Election Commission will orchestrate a theatrical performance around his decision, finishing it off with a lineup, cameras, and computers. This is a joke. Why not simply make direct appointments?
The whole exercise reveals that the government's electoral and party systems are not suitable for the Somali context.

Beryahaan warka beledka yaal wuxuu u badan yahay doodaha la xiriira sida loo abbaarayo maamul-goboleedyada muddo-dhaafka ah. Waxaad maqlaysaa “Madaxweynuhu wuxuu kuraasta maamul-goboleedyada siiyey musharraxiin saaxiibadiis ah” Haddana, waxaa hadalka ku jira ‘ereyga doorashada.” Macnuhu waa in kuraasta maamul-goboleedyada uu Xassan Sheekh leeyahay oo uu qofkuu doono siin karo. Yaab!
Marka uu madaxweynuhu bixiyo kuraasta ayaa xisbiga iyo guddiyadu billaabayaan jilitaanka riwaayad lagu xalaalaynayo go’aanka – dad la safayo iyo kaamerooyin iyo computer-kii tiradu ku jirtay. Haddiiba ay sidaas tahay oo kuraasta uu madaxweynuhu leeyahay maxaa dadka loo wareerinayaa? Muu magacaabo dhammaantood?
Waxa kaliya oo ka soo baxay isku-dayga dowladda waa in nidaamyada doorashooyinka iyo kan xisbiyada ee ay wataan, aysan ahayn kuwii ku habboonaa Soomaalida.
