Re: Zero Season 4, Episode 17 - Spoiler Warning
Once again, I think this is another episode where it's best I don't say anything.
NAH. JUST KIDDING. HOLY SHIT WHAT AN EPISODE IT WAS. SERIOUSLY. WHAT AN EPISODE. I WANT TO LIKE PRAISE THE HELL OUT OF VINCENT'S SEQUENCE STRAIGHT AWAY BUT LET ME TALK ABOUT THE REST OF THE EPISODE FIRST.
Yeah, honestly, the rest of the episode before the fight between Reid vs. Julius was awesome too. The sequence when Subaru and co. rush over to Shaula about to transform is quite good and well adapted. Loved the transformation sequence, and even more so, the sequence where Subaru, Beatrice and Meili are carried down the tower by a Centaur. That had some nice angles and close-ups.
And OMG. THE TOWER LIGHTING LOOKS SO GOOD WHEN RAM RUNS INTO RYE AND TELLS HIM TO DIE SQUEALING LIKE A PIG. YESSSSS.
I imagine it's going to be preserved for Episode 18, and if it is, then oh my god. That episode will be an absolute feast.
There's also a bunch of flashbacks to younger Julius in the episode, which gel in well with the episode at large.
But yeah. I am just so stun-locked by the main fight sequence man. So let me just get into that right now.
The direction and build-up, just before the fight, was excellent. I really, really loved the sequences of his quasi-spirits blooming and Reid pulling out the sword from the pedestal. Awesome, awesome impact frame to accompany it.
AND NOW ONTO VINCENT'S PIECE DE RESISTANCE!
Yeah, honestly. I am just lost for words. Like I am genuinely stunned by how good it is. I think we're even going to be seeing people rate it higher than his work on Garfiel vs. Kurgan. I can barely decide right now between the two. It's all just so kino man.
Not only is the animation so dynamic and exhilarating, the colouring by the team and the compositing is at a whole other level. They did something so beautiful with highlights in Julius' hair, and Julius' cloak. I can't even begin to describe it. Just watch next week and feast.
Vincent's sequence, as I teased yesterday, is split into two parts. The first part is about 1 minute and 30 seconds, and features the first part of the fight. And unlike the Light Novel version, White Fox have drawn inspiration from the Web Novel, in that Julius uses his Spirits during the fight. It's just so good man.
The sequence transitions into a flashback from Eridna's point of view, of her imposed over a scene with young Anastasia, highlighting the difficult choice she has to make now, trapped in her Od. Forgetting Julius if she decides to leave. This was so emotional and genuinely a perfect transition scene in my opinion before we get back to the second part of the fight. I also loved the boarding here.
Back to the second part of Vincent's sequence, which is 30 seconds long! We return to the fight and such an emotional OST plays over this next sequence, it's just so gorgeous. The choreography of the duel is so beautiful. And the way Anastasia implores Julius, her knight, before Julius uses his final attack. Sheer. Kino. The contrast between her, Julius readying his final attack, and Reid poising his sword with a really cool sketch-style (?) Dragon imposed next to him, I don't even know how to explain it, is so fucking peak man.
And the afterglow of the fight after. Beautiful. 9.9/10 sequence.
Anyways, the episode continues on to "pleased to meet you", with Anastasia having come out of her Od, and forgetting Julius due to the effects of the Authority of Gluttony.
And finally, the episode ends with a cliffhanger of Emilia reaching the first floor and encountering Volcanica there.
Technically the episode is extended a tiny bit. 24 minutes and 30 seconds. Opening plays. No ending.
Title: Good Loser
Rating: 9.35/10 (9.9/10 for Vincent's sequence and the build-up + Eridna/Anastasia scene).
Turkey School Shooter left terrible manifesto that mentions Natsuki Subaru from Re:Zero:
"Loneliness is not a reason, it's pretty dumb, like Subaru Natsuki was very lonely but..." (Rest of text is not shown)
