The Palestinian author and visionary Ghassan Kanafani was murdered by Israeli agents on this day in 1972, together with his niece, who was a child.

Kanafani's family was forced out of their home during the Nakba in 1948. His writings—Men in the Sun, and Return to Haifa—spoke to the ongoing trauma of Israeli occupation and ethnic cleansing.

Kanafani called for the right of return for all Palestinian refugees. This demand is more relevant now than ever.

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan has repeatedly used his platform at the World Cup to speak up for Palestinians.

After Egypt beat Australia, he brought a Palestinian flag onto the pitch and dedicated his team's first ever knockout victory at a World Cup to the people of Palestine. When questioned about the gesture at a press conference on Monday, he spoke on the subject for several minutes.

"Before being Arab, Muslim, Christian or anything else, I am a human being," he told Reuters. "Through football — the world’s soft power — I want to send a message: please let the Palestinian people live. I ask athletes and journalists everywhere to help deliver that ‌message."

And following Egypt’s defeat to Argentina, he accused the media at the tournament of "staying silent" while children were being killed.
