"England had Argentina EXACTLY where they should have wanted them." 😔
@Tim_Vickery says Thomas Tuchel's substitutions were to blame for their defeat to Argentina 💔

"They were more afraid to drop out of the tournament than having the excitement and hunger to win it" 👀
Thomas Tuchel reflects on England's Euro2024 campaign 🏴

12% - Average possession between Anthony Gordon's opener and Lautaro Martínez's winner (55th to 92nd minute):
12% - 🏴 England
88% - 🇦🇷 Argentina
Trapped.
I’d have liked to see England’s outlets remain on the pitch. Rashford and Madueke as the others tired, just to keep the jeopardy there as Argentina pushed.
There was so little risk attached to their attacking substitutions.
🗣️ Thomas Tuchel: "We decided to go to a back five because the gaps were just too open... Of course, the responsibility is on the coach. If it doesn't go well, it is easy to say it is wrong."
The two times Argentina have been pressured, they almost buckled.
With a bit more quality, Egypt see the game over the line, and before the Embolo red, they were on the ropes.
Mind-boggling that Tuchel surrendered all that space so early.
@DanWood_Journo It did increase but not to the level it was after the hydration break. I agree that I thought he would use the break as the perfect opportunity to get them further up the pitch.
It felt like we didn’t learn any lessons from the criticism that was levelled at Southgate
What made it so infuriating was that Tuchel had in-game warnings.
The pressure increased when he replaced Gordon with Konsa. Instead of reverting to the original formation, he doubled down with Burn and O’Reilly and then refused to make changes when Argentina equalised.
Got exactly what we deserved. I genuinely can’t get over what we’ve seen from Tuchel there. This feels so much worse than Croatia, Italy, Spain.
It was right there for England, playing well, leading, great options on the bench and he’s just completing botched it tactically. Thrown the initiative away and gone out in pretty pathetic style.
So disappointing.
@freeze_IV This exact thought keeps going through my head. All the coaching badges and previous elite-level experience and yet there is a failure from some coaches to see what is happening right in front of them
Wayne Rooney talking a lot of sense. When you are winning, keep your foot on the pedal. Don’t sit back against one of the best players ever whose greatest strength in control and balance around a penalty area. Inevitable outcome.
Tuchel was the main reason behind that Argentinian turnaround.
It may be reactionary, but I’m not sure I’ve seen an elite coach mismanage a game as badly as that.
