« Espagne 1932, 1937, 2017.
I’m in absolute awe of THE BLACK BALL, a sprawling epic from Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi tracing the gay experience from an era of silence, oppression, and persecution to the present. With superb direction, breathtaking cinematography, and ambitious editing that crosscuts three generations of gay men in 1932, 1937, and 2017, it’s poetic storytelling on a vast generational canvas spanning times of peace and war, with a allegorical play inside the film’s narrative, and making the past feel contemporary. Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close appear in brief but significant roles. Emotionally rich and monumental in scope, this is the kind of film that feels like a very special achievement as you’re watching it unfold right before your very eyes.
THE BLACK BALL is my favorite competition film at Cannes this year. A big gay epic staged with heaps of thought and style. Such a refreshing jolt of energy. Los Javis are the real deal. https://t.co/8avnEs2kvR
Saw THE BLACK BALL this morning and it absolutely broke me. The Javis connect three narratives of gay men across generations, learning to love without fear, through repression, rejection, and understanding. Epic, gorgeous, hot, and huge hearted. Maybe my fave of #cannes
Through stories of gay romance, LA BOLA NEGRA depicts how the shame, guilt and secrets of the past echo through history. This is big, bold cinema: lyrical, intimate and expansive, and it’s hard not to be swept away by it all, the ending(s) gave me goosebumps. Plus Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close turn up in two small but memorable parts, and we have to love directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi for that on top of everything else. Brilliant! #Cannes2026
La Bola Negra - Huzzah! Gay cinema reigns! Monumental, majestic, epically cinematic Spanish filmmaking spanning 3 timelines following 3 gay men throughout Spanish history. An anthem against fascism! Especially vivid, grand storytelling with an unforgettable score. #Cannes2026
“We wanted to make a big, bold queer movie… This is an adventure movie, a war movie, a big movie with a budget that is the biggest you can get in Spain, and and it's directed by two gay men that tonight have this award!” — Los Javis on LA BOLA NEGRA
In a Cannes competition lineup where even the best-received films feel a little too familiar, THE BLACK BALL stands out all the more for its nerve and ambition. Had it arrived a few days ago, people wouldn’t be calling this Cannes so soft
Cannes competition gets a shot of adrenaline from THE BLACK BALL, a sweeping, exciting gay triptych from Los Javis. Love! War! Cameos from Penelope Cruz and Glenn Close! This is a surefire, across-the-board Oscar contender so I’d expect a major pickup soon.
