Beyond Agriculture, The President's Strategic Message on ICT and BPO

One of the most significant, yet less discussed, messages from H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni's 2026 State of the Nation Address was the recognition of ICT and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) as strategic pillars of Uganda's economic transformation.

While much attention is often given to agriculture and manufacturing, the President explicitly identified ICT as one of the four sectors with the greatest potential to drive wealth creation, employment, and national competitiveness. More importantly, he highlighted BPO as a practical avenue for job creation, particularly for Uganda's growing youth population.

This signals a clear policy direction: Uganda's future economy will not only be built in farms and factories, but also in innovation hubs, software companies, digital service centers, call centers, data processing facilities, and technology-driven enterprises.

For investors, entrepreneurs, and technology companies, the message is clear:

⏺️ The digital economy is no longer a supporting sector, it is a national priority.

⏺️ BPO presents a major opportunity for youth employment and export of services.

⏺️ Uganda's transition into the knowledge economy will require stronger investments in digital skills, software development, AI, data services, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure.

⏺️ ICT companies have an increasing role to play in positioning Uganda as a regional technology and outsourcing destination.

As we move towards a knowledge-based economy, the challenge now shifts from policy recognition to implementation, developing talent, attracting investment, strengthening digital infrastructure, and creating globally competitive ICT and BPO enterprises.

The future of Uganda's economy is increasingly digital. The time to build is now.

The platform (@ebetpafrica) is helping bridge the digital divide in underserved tourism destinations by empowering over 1,000 tourism-related Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across Uganda. Through the platform, local tourism products and services can be uploaded, showcased, marketed, and sold to tourists through a centralized digital marketplace.

It’s truly an impactful initiative towards digitizing and expanding access to Uganda’s tourism ecosystem.

There was a time in my teenage years when I would read and study the journey of Jack Ma and the rise of @AlibabaGroup with so much admiration and inspiration. Back then, it felt like a distant dream, one of those stories you learn from, but never imagine becoming part of your own reality.

I never thought that one day I would personally visit the headquarters of @AlibabaGroup, walk through the environment where one of the world’s most transformative technology companies was built, or even get the opportunity to see Jack Ma with my own eyes.

Yet life has a powerful way of reminding us that the world is truly one global village. What once seemed incredibly far away became a journey of less than 13 hours and over 8,500 kilometers, leading me to Alibaba Xixi Campus in Hangzhou 🇨��

For me, this was more than just a visit. It was a defining moment of exposure, learning, inspiration, and possibility, one that will forever remain part of the history and growth journey of Sumic IT Solutions Ltd (@SumicUg)

Moments like these remind me that vision, consistency, and purpose can open doors beyond what we originally imagine. They also remind me of the importance of institutions and organizations that intentionally create opportunities for emerging innovators and entrepreneurs across the world.

Special appreciation to International Trade Centre (@ITCnews) for believing in the Sumic vision and making this experience possible. Opportunities like these do not just transform businesses, they transform mindsets, networks, and the future of innovation itself.

Bridging Classroom Knowledge with Real-World Practice.

This week, I delivered a guest lecture to Year 2 ICT students at the Uganda Institute of Information & Communications Technology (@UICTug), in collaboration with Ms. Brenda Nakanjako a Lecturer in the ICT & Engineering Department at UICT.

The session focused on connecting key academic concepts, such as:

➡️ Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)

➡️ System Analysis & Design

➡️ Software Engineering principles, to real-world industry applications.

From practical case studies to interactive discussions, the goal was simple: help students see how what they study translates into actual systems, products, and impact in the market.

📌 What stood out most was the level of curiosity, engagement, and ambition from the students.

These are the future builders, innovators, and problem-solvers of our digital economy, and investing time in them is not optional, it’s necessary.

At Sumic IT Solutions Ltd (@SumicUg), we strongly believe in contributing to the ecosystem not just through building solutions, but also through mentorship, knowledge sharing, and shaping industry-ready talent.

Yesterday, I had a conversation that stayed with me.

One of the founders of a company that has consistently trusted us with digital transformation projects asked me a simple but powerful question:

“What motivates you to keep building Sumic?”

For a moment, I paused, not because I didn’t have an answer, but because the answer carries weight.

I told him:

“It’s the long, rich journey, from campus days in 2019 to where we are today. Through the ups and downs, the tides, the storms… we never chose to quit. We’ve survived pandemics, business depressions, uncertainty and we’re still moving forward.”

But when I later reflected on that journey… I realized something deeper.

That history doesn’t just inspire me, it scares me.

Because when you truly understand what it took to survive, to build, to push through when things didn’t make sense… you realize this isn’t just business.

It’s commitment.
It’s resilience.
It’s a responsibility to keep going.

Every headline, every milestone, every quiet win, it all carries a story most people never see.

And maybe that’s the real motivation:

Not just where we are going…
But everything we have already refused to let break us.

We keep building!
