A pleasure to receive Ambassador Aliki Koutsomitopoulou of Greece for a farewell call.
Her tenure has seen an impressive growth in our bilateral ties. Appreciated her contributions and wished her the best in future endeavours.

Those who have held state power in Bangladesh for over two years—having seized it through illegal and unconstitutional means before forming a government—are failing to govern the country effectively. This is because they lack the public's trust. The people desire only the astute leadership of Sheikh Hasina. The 180 million people of Bangladesh have previously witnessed the "magic" Sheikh Hasina brings during times of crisis. In contrast, Yunus and Tarique are currently unable to deliver even one percent of what the people need. Achieving robust GDP growth is a distant prospect; while the current GDP growth rate is reported at 3.4%, the actual figure is likely closer to 2.4%—the lowest in the history of Bangladesh.
A female student went missing from the Ayesha Siddiqua Madrasa in Jadurchar, Savar; when her family and journalists went to inquire, 10 ordinary people were beaten and injured by the psychopathic Muslims of the madrasa.
Awami League President Sheikh Hasina said Durga Puja represents Bengal’s rich heritage and communal harmony. Her message underscores the importance of protecting Bangladesh’s pluralistic traditions and ensuring that every religious community can celebrate with dignity and security.

The dangers of state-sponsored radicalization in Bangladesh
To clarify her position, Tasneem Siraj Mahbub, Associate Professor in the English Department of Dhaka University, released a video message. Students had protested against her after she spoke to a female student in class about wearing a niqab. Subsequently, the English Department authorities decided to relieve her of all the courses she was teaching and redistributed those courses among other teachers.
The incident occurred on 7 October. After that, Tasneem Siraj Mahbub remained largely silent. Today, Saturday (10 October), in a video message posted on her Facebook account, she presented her account of the incident that took place in a master's final semester class and the subsequent departmental decision.
In the video message, the female teacher Tasneem Siraj Mahbub explained the 7 October incident, stating that she did not instruct the student wearing a niqab in the classroom to change her clothes, remove the niqab, or leave the class. Rather, she was facing difficulty identifying the student and establishing effective communication because she could not see the student’s eyes. For this reason, she expressed her discomfort.
Tasneem Siraj Mahbub further said that on that day, one student was sitting with two other female students whose entire face, including the eyes, was covered. She was having difficulty identifying her and communicating while maintaining eye contact. As a result, she did not feel comfortable while teaching. As a teacher, she considers effective communication with students and a comfortable teaching environment important, which is why she spoke to that student about the matter.
Mentioning that she believes in Islam and follows religious practices in her personal and family life, the English Department teacher said in the video that students know about her religious beliefs, values, and conduct over nearly 34 years of teaching. There is no question of insulting any student’s religious beliefs or clothing.
According to Tasneem Siraj, there was no discussion about asking that student to change her clothes. She only said that she was feeling uncomfortable because she could not see the eyes. After that, the student left the class. There was no argument with her on this issue. However, there was an exchange of views with another student who spoke in support of that student regarding freedom of clothing, identification, and the need for effective communication in the classroom.
Tasneem Siraj Mahbub stated that during the exchange of views, she mentioned the instruction in verse 31 of Surah An-Nur of the Holy Quran Sharif about limiting the display of modesty and beauty. Citing the example of the other two students wearing burqas in class, she also said that, according to her understanding, it is possible to observe purdah in modest clothing while keeping the face visible. Referring to her own experience of performing the holy Hajj, she also mentioned the Hadith regarding women not wearing niqab in the state of ihram.
Tasneem further said that many other students were present in class that day wearing hijab and burqa. Although their faces were covered, their eyes were visible. Therefore, there was no difficulty recognizing them. Nothing was said to any of them about their clothing. The concerned student was not forced to answer any questions, asked to remove the niqab, ordered to leave the class, or punished because of religious attire. She also did not prohibit her from attending her classes in the future.
Tasneem Siraj Mahbub said that after the incident, she received anonymous phone calls, emails, objectionable messages, and threats. She claimed that this has created concerns about her own safety.
Tasneem Siraj said that after the student left the class, she learned from others that the student had left feeling hurt. Stating that it was not her intention to hurt anyone, she informed others that she wanted to express regret to that student.
People Trapped in a Web of Cases: 67% of Prisoners Remain Unsentenced!
——
More than 106,000 people are currently in prison. Yet nearly 67 percent of them have not been sentenced. If people have to go to prison before being found guilty, then where is the justice? Bangladesh’s prisons have a total capacity of 45,186 inmates. Yet nearly 106,000 people are currently behind bars — 226 prisoners for every 100 places. This is in terms of overcrowding relative to prison capacity.
Bangladesh ranks among the highest in South Asia. Since August 5, 2024, Awami League leaders and activists have been arrested one after another. Thousands of people are being sent to prison after being arrested in what are described as politically motivated cases. The most alarming fact is that nearly two out of every three prisoners have not yet been convicted. Yet they remain behind bars.
Medical care is inadequate, while the quality of food is also very poor. Prisoners spend day after day waiting for bail. For those who remember the period from 2001 to 2006, this picture is not unfamiliar. If Awami League leaders and activists are sent to prison before their guilt has been established, then is this justice — or punishment before a verdict?
Because if imprisonment itself becomes a punishment before a court delivers its verdict, the question inevitably arises: Who is this justice actually for?

A poor people’s healthcare centre demolished overnight using a government excavator, alleged looting in the presence of police, and an investigation pointing to a BNP reserved-seat MP. Who will be held accountable?
Healthcare, public property, and citizens’ safety must never become casualties of political power.

Healthcare Under Attack: BNP-Linked Mob Demolishes 50-Year-Old Clinic in Dhaka
250 masked men reportedly stormed and demolished the nearly 50-year-old RADDA MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1, after taking security guards hostage and looting medicines, vaccines, medical equipment and cash. The centre served poor women and children.
BNP's reserved-seat MP Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti is the prime accused by the locals.
A healthcare centre was reduced to rubble—just before a measles-rubella vaccination drive was due to begin.
This is not just the destruction of a building. It is the destruction of healthcare access for some of Dhaka’s most vulnerable citizens.
