Pakal Dul HE Project (1000 MW) achieves TBM-I breakthrough:
In a major step towards completion, CVPPLтАЩs prestigious, 1000 MW, Pakal Dul Hydroelectric Project, achieved first breakthrough of Head Race Tunnel-I being constructed by Tunnel Boring Machine. The Circular shaped, 7.2 metersтАЩ diameter, approx. 7.35 kilometres of underground tunnel, with 2 km of overburden (rock cover), has been successfully completed with Hard Rock Double Shield Tunnel Boring Machine in Indian Himalayas.
The historic daylighting was achieved today in the virtual presence of CMD NHPC, Shri Bhupendra Gupta, along with all Directors & Senior Officers of NHPC connected online from Corporate Office Faridabad. Managing Director-CVPPL, Shri Ramesh Mukhiya and other Senior Officers had joined online from CVPPL Corporate Office Jammu. Meanwhile, HoP- Pakal Dul HE Project, Shri Vishal Anand and senior project officials were present on the site at Drangdhuran to witness this important milestone. Major portions of the two HRTs, from Dool to Drangdhuran, are being constructed by TBMs engaged by M/s Larsen & Tubro and a minor portion has been constructed through traditional Drilling-Blasting Method by M/s JP Associates. Notwithstanding the geological challenges in the Chenab valley region, this largescale hydropower project is fast progressing towards its early commissioning.
On this occasion, CMD-NHPC, Chairman-CVPPL & MD-CVPPL expressed their immense gratitude towards the Government of India, HonтАЩble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for the special support provided to Pakal Dul HE Project and the Government of J&K for their continued support & cooperation in building the Project of national importance. He added that the project will play a decisive role in establishing the CVPPL, strengthening energy security, enhancing grid stability and contributing to the socio-economic development of UT of J&K.

Shri Ramesh Mukhiya, congratulated the entire team of Pakal Dul HE Project on achievement of this important milestone and urged them to put in their best efforts to complete all four units. MD, CVPPL is on a project review visit to Kishtwar since 18.05.2026 and is inspecting all worksites of Pakal Dul, Kiru & Kwar HE Projects. In a major step towards commissioning of Kiru HE Project, presently under active construction by CVPPL (a Joint Venture of NHPC and JKSPDC), Stator (156 MW), weighing 244 MT, has been successfully lowered in Unit-1 on 21.04.2026.
The Milestone was achieved in the presence of HOP Kiru HEP & Officers from CVPPL and M/s Andritz (Contractor for E&M package works of Kiru HE Project).

CVPPL Started the Stringing Works of Transmission system for evacuation of power from Pakal Dul, Kiru and Kwar HE Projects of CVPPL
In another significant development, Stringing Works has been started on 13.01.2026 for 400kV Double Circuit (Triple HTLS Conductor) Transmission Line from Pot Head Yard of Kiru HEP to Kishtwar Pooling Station including LILO of one Circuit of 400kV D/c (Triple HTLS Conductor) Kiru - Kishtwar line at Pot Head Yard of Kwar & Pakal Dul HE Projects.
The said transmission line shall be completed well within schedule to match the commissioning of CVPPL Projects and these Stringing Works, shall facilitate in timely completion of above transmission lines. #hydropower #RenewableEnergy

Ushering in a moment of pride and renewed momentum for NHPC, wet commissioning of UnitтАУ3 (250 MW) of the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project commenced on 27.12.2025 with the successful mechanical run of the machine, marking the beginning of commissioning of the third unit of the nationтАЩs largest hydropower project.
On the occasion, Shri Bhupender Gupta, CMD, NHPC conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry of Power, Government of India, the Governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, former NHPC leadership, the Subansiri team, executing agencies, project partners and all stakeholders. He described the achievement as a testament to NHPCтАЩs engineering excellence and a powerful step toward IndiaтАЩs clean, green and self-reliant energy vision. He commended the Subansiri team led by Shri Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director & Head of Project, encouraging sustained commitment for timely commissioning of the remaining units.

Shri Bhupender Gupta, CMD, NHPC visited 1000 MW Pakal Dul HE Project, Kishtwar, UT of Jammu & Kashmir on 02.12.2025. Sh. Ramesh Mukhiya, Managing Director, CVPPL, accompanied him during the visit. While reviewing the progress of ongoing Civil, Hydro-Mechanical and Electro-Mechanical works at the site, CMD, NHPC, expressed satisfaction over the progress of works and asked Officials to put their efforts to ensure commissioning of Project within the stipulated timeframe. During the visit, Shri Vishal Anand, Head of Project, briefed CMD, NHPC and MD, CVPPL, on the status of construction activities and apprised about Project issues and challenges.
