Indeed. I’ve always thought we should learn from the best in French, German and Scandinavian health systems but anytime you suggest a diversion from the Attlee/Bevan model of the NHS, America is flung in your face. Which is the last place to learn anything on health systems.
Even staunch supporters of the EU, like my old mate Alan Johnson, were not interested in learning from Europe, as happened on This Week. The virus will close down debate even more. The NHS status quo is now the status quo for the foreseeable future.
The basic principle — that decent health care should be available regardless of wealth — is inviolable. Which is right. But Europe has lessons within that principle. However we are where we are. There will be no debate over reform of NHS. Only on its funding and resources.
