Chloroplast went through the process of endosymbiosis to become apart of the plant cell. Endosymbiosis is when a prokaryote cell is engulfed by a bigger prokaryote cell. We think this is true because we have our own DNA, can reproduce on our own, and have a double membrane.
In these types of environments, chloroplasts use retrograde signaling to alarm the nucleus so that they can optimize energy production from sunlight. The chloroplast are the heroes again.
