@pinkvelvet_68 I attended a school like that where we were fined if we speak Hiligaynon or any other lang/dialect. Still, I was able to speak Tagalog okay when I went to uni in Manila. We had Filipino classes since elementary and the media also uses Tagalog. Everything feels like an excuse,tbh.

Nah, the issue isn't being fluent in another language but refusing to learn the local language. Op is 28 y/o, if there was a problem with your upbringing then at some point, it's your responsibility to correct it.

On the other hand, we have Filipino subject since elementary? I grew up in Visayas as well and I spoke Tagalog just fine when I started uni in Manila. I just learned it from school and from the media I consumed growing up.

Like my young niece who watched Peppa Pig in her formative years and had a British accent at one point can now speak basic Tagalog without struggling because her parents realized learning to speak Tagalog specially if you live in the Philippines IS important.

im a pure filipino but english was my first language growing up from watching cartoons on tv and i struggled learning tagalog later on in life so people used to make fun of me for not having a good filipino accent. that's how mean locals will get if u dont speak it fluently.
