THEORY is very DIFFERENT than REALITY!

I have been in chess for over 50 years, as a professional player, best-selling author (with many top selling books), award-winning coach (from absolute beginners, to top 10 grandmasters, and world championship contenders), and prolific organizer (over 900 rated tournaments), etc.

Chess is my lifelong passion. When I offer public advice, it is carefully done from years of personal and professional experience. I do not like to get into silly macho public debates, especially with people who just like to argue and fight.

Sometimes it is very aggravating to see someone who has some random theories in his/her heads, without experience or success, speak like they are “real experts”. When well known successful coaches like GMs Ramesh, Aagaard, Grivas, etc. speak, I definitely would pay attention, even if I sometimes may disagree on some points. With their proven success, they deserve the proper respect.

However, it is actually very dangerous and harmful to give wrong advice or opinions. I have seen horrible advice and opinions from “internet experts” like beginners should focus more on openings, endgames are unimportant, middlegame strategies are overrated, there should be no separate tournaments for girls and women, female belong in the bedroom and not the chessboard, etc.

Strong grandmasters do not necessarily make good coaches. Strong theoreticians do not necessarily make good players. High level chess politicians do not necessarily make good organizers. Many skills do not translate into success in other areas. The lack of self awareness, and personal deficiencies, combined with strong egos, make a dangerous combination.

Therefore, my advice is make sure you know the source of the “free” advice, because sometimes it is worth the price, which is nothing!
