From a friend in Korea, about Lee Jae-myung’s extremely inflammatory rhetoric and his idea about instituting the concept of family guilt:

“I am writing to bring to your urgent attention a deeply troubling shift in rhetoric by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, which I believe poses a serious threat not only to democratic norms in South Korea, but also to regional stability and alliance trust with the United States.

According to a report from KBS World, President Lee declared on December 2, 2025, that individuals accused of state-power abuse — including torture, fabricating cases to imprison political opponents, or plotting a ‘military coup’— should be ‘treated like Nazi war criminals’ and punished ‘for as long as they live.’

More disturbingly, he went further: he stated that the heirs and family members of such accused individuals should also be held legally and financially responsible, with their inherited assets subject to confiscation or restrictions — ensuring that ‘punishment never ends.’

This rhetoric drastically exceeds the boundaries of conventional criminal accountability. It:
Resembles collective punishment schemes characteristic of authoritarian regimes.
Evokes punitive doctrines from totalitarian regimes, not modern democratic justice.
Effectively reintroduces hereditary guilt — eerily similar to ancient ‘family-guilt’ (연좌제) practices.

What amplifies this alarm is the political and security context:
The remarks appear explicitly targeted at members and supporters of the previous administration under Yoon Suk‑yeol — especially those involved in the 2024–2025 ‘national emergency’ and martial-law measures deployed in response to nationwide protests following alleged election-security threats and constitutional crisis.

This suggests a deliberate pattern:
A sitting president signaling politically motivated, retroactive punishment.
Targeting not only former leaders and officials, but their entire families.
Under the banner of ‘Nazi-style justice.’

In a country still officially without an armistice with North Korea — a state known for ongoing cyber-espionage, disinformation campaigns, and clandestine influence operations — this shift in internal justice philosophy is deeply destabilizing. It threatens:
Rule of law
Separation of powers
Civil and political liberties
Fair political participation

Mutual trust within the U.S.–ROK alliance

This rhetoric marks a dangerous transition: from prosecuting proven crimes to persecuting political identity and association. It criminalizes governance acts and national-security decisions made under legitimate democratic authority — branding them as ‘state-terror acts’ punishable for life, even for innocent family members.

Historically, such authoritarian escalations precede:
Political purges and show trials
Judicial system weaponization
Systematic elimination of dissent
Collapse of pluralistic governance and eventual societal instability.

I believe this development requires serious scrutiny from the international human-rights and freedom-defense community — particularly in the United States.”
