Eastern Canadian refineries rely heavily on Enbridge pipelines (like Line 5) that carry western Canadian crude through the US Midwest before re-entering at Sarnia. Canada also imports hundreds of thousands of barrels/day of US crude and refined products, plus substantial natural gas to Ontario/Quebec and cross-border electricity for grid balancing. The systems are deeply integrated.

Carney says Canada pulled out of trade negotiations because of “last-minute changes in the proposed terms that were unfair, uneconomic and called into question the reliability of any deal.”

US Trade Rep. Greer says Canada “declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier this week.”

The Canadian people need to know what these last-minute changes were and we also need a better picture of Canada’s red lines in negotiations.

Providing clarity at this pivotal time in the history of our country would not constitute negotiating in public, nor would it undermine Canada’s position to publicize the details of what happened last night.

Before passing judgement, I encourage commentators to await further information and detail.
