"Beatty has served on the Kennedy Center Board since 2019 when she was appointed by then Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

When Trump came to power in January 2025, he filled the Board with Trump sycophants and even named himself the Chairman.

Since he couldn’t remove Beatty, he had his Kennedy Center Board literally try to silence her at the key meeting in December 2025 discussing renaming the Kennedy Center after Trump.

At that meeting, Beatty was joining via phone. She soon realized her comments and objections could not be heard because Trump’s team had muted her.

From there, the Board voted to rename the Kennedy Center after Trump. The next day Trump’s press secretary had the audacity to say that vote to name the Center after Trump was unanimous.

Just four days later, she filed a lawsuit against Trump—with the legal assistance of Democracy Defenders—to reverse the name change.

The lawsuit argued that the Center was named by Act of Congress and only Congress can change the name.

She is 100% correct. As a brief history lesson, in 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed bipartisan legislation creating a National Cultural Center in the nation’s capital. However, it lacked funding and the project languished.

That was until President John F. Kennedy committed in 1962 to raise $30 million to construct it.

Kennedy even organized a star-studded 1962 televised fundraiser featuring, among others, conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein, poet Robert Frost, musician Harry Belafonte and 7-year-old cellist Yo‑Yo Ma.

At that event, Kennedy spoke powerfully of the importance of the arts, “As a great democratic society, we have a special responsibility to the arts, for art is the great democrat calling forth creative genius from every sector of society, disregarding race or religion or wealth or color.”

The Center was never intended to be named after Kennedy but after he was assassinated in November 1963, Congress and President Lyndon Johnson enacted legislation to honor him.

The Center was then designated as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy recognizing his devotion to the advancement of the performing arts in the United States."
