In 1879, Seventy Geisha from the Yanagibashi district in Tokyo joined together to perform the Dance of the Stars and Stripes to honor Ulysses S Grant during his visit to Japan.

Museum photography is wonderful for documenting historic textiles, but I sometimes wonder what we’ve lost in the process.

Most of these garments were never meant to be experienced under bright, even LED lighting. They were worn and admired in rooms illuminated by daylight, candles, or oil lamps—light that shifted constantly as people moved.

Standing before a piece like this, I can’t help but wonder whether the sculptural relief was intended to come alive in that changing light. As shadows deepened and highlights traveled across the padded silk, a dragon’s face might have seemed to breathe, emerging and receding with every flicker of the flame.

Perhaps part of understanding these extraordinary textiles isn’t simply preserving them—but trying to imagine the world of light they were originally created to inhabit.
