Yesterday marked the 157th FDNY Medal Day Ceremony, honoring the firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and officers whose courage and commitment keep New Yorkers safe every day.

This year, 50 acts of extraordinary heroism and lifesaving service were recognized.

Among those honored were Lieutenant Patrick Donlon, who received the Department's highest award, and Paramedic Naytasha Doyle and Probationary Firefighter Paul Saladis III, recipients of the Christopher J. Prescott Medal, FDNY EMS Operations' highest honor.

To all of this year's recipients: thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your dedication to the 8.5 million New Yorkers who depend on you.

During the Columbia protests, Espaillat amplified baseless claims that cast largely student protesters as dangerous extremists, helping legitimize a smear campaign against his own constituents. In doing so, he echoed talking points promoted by AIPAC and others seeking to discredit the students. Today, more than 100 students have been suspended, expelled, or otherwise disciplined by Columbia, yet he has done nothing to support them or speak out on their behalf.

To correct the record: Rep. Espaillat did not reach out to me or my family when I was detained or during the months that followed. He only contacted my team nearly a year later, after Darializa publicly challenged him. As I've said before, it's unfortunate that he chose to prioritize AIPAC's interests over those of the people living in his own district.
