No, you already have a forward motion (inertia) . The same reason you jack forward if a vehicle suddenly stops . Because you also have a forward motion . So if you jump for few seconds you will surely land in the pool.

John Newton was a slave ship captain , himself was a slave for a period of his life . John Newton later become a mentor to William Wilberforce (a Member of British Parliament) , He encouraged and worked with Wilberforce when working on the act of abolition of slave trade .
