2 - There are just two occasions of a team scoring first in the semi-final but not reaching the final of the FIFA World Cup in the 21st century – both of them are England (vs Croatia in 2018 and Argentina in 2026).
Familiar.
Thomas Tuchel was hired to make the big decisions as England boss and failed when it mattered most. Early promise with big subs and bold calls (particularly against Croatia). Surrendered after Anthony Gordon took the lead. Threw defenders on in an attempt to hold on - 35 minutes was always going to be too long against Lionel Messi’s army. Pulling Gordon took the route out away, no pace. Just the pain of the Argentina barrage. Stuck in the England half. England cracked. Had to go for the second goal; that was the criticism Gareth Southgate so often faced - Tuchel now must face the same question.
