"It's not about them."
This is in reference to any reader. It applies to strangers, critics, fans, even friends: any opinion haver.
Flaws can be celebrated, repeated tropes welcomed, pacing erratic; the people that accept it as just-so and those that don't are outside the sphere of what the work is, but they aren't a part it. They could be banging on the walls or licking it or whatever but they aren't IN it.
